Advice on what class room management software?

Afternoon all,

 

We are looking into getting a classroom management system and am after advice on what's best.

I've used Ranger remote/Netsupport in the past which seemed to work ok but was just wondering what else is available.

 

We have XP (soon to be Win7) machines and CSE on the network.

 

Any advice appreciated.

IMPERO is a fantastic product I have used for many years.

Trialled a few over the summer just gone and went for LanSchool - very solid & reliable, easy to install/use (including for teachers), very powerful. Just does classroom management, i.e. none of the bloat that NetSupport has - which admittedly can be very nice, but I had no need for it and its annual maintenance fee, so LanSchool won the day and we're very happy with it.

A few questions for you ...

 

What does the school intend to do with it?

 

Will it be used purely for monitoring of pupil activity? By Teachers? By IT Support? By both?

 

Will it be used to help deploy software or settings?

 

Will it be used by teachers to push files to students?

 

Will it be used by teachers to share their desktop or to share the desktops of others?

 

Are there any other educational reasons you want to use this?

 

Will it be used with devices not connected to the school network?

 

If using it to monitor students is someone going to actively checking or do you need it to automatically react to inappropriate content / actions?

A word about. iTalc. iTalc is freeware, so a lot may consider it, I used it well when I had an XP lab, but when we moved to Win 7 even with iTalc new Win 7 version I could never get it to work and see the other computers like when I had XP. I even had the computer science department technicians try it in their win 7 lab too and they couldn't get it to work, so we gave up. Shame as it shouldn't be that hard to get to work on Win 7 but it is.

I've just bought before Christmas Impero along with a good number of fellow secondary's in my LA after we viewed Impero and LanSchool, we all felt the package in terms of the software in Impero was light years ahead of LanSchool and felt more confident in the product.

 

I have used NetSupport Manager in the past which certainly was worth a look but when I got pricing for it, the costs were enough to make you feel very ill you could buy a small child for the money they wanted which was a shame as it was good.

 

Nothing but praise so far from Impero and the support from them, well worth evaluating and talking to them. @russdev is very helpful and a great asset to them

Just started with Impero at our school and so far it's ticking all our boxes well. It's saving us grief already and hopefully it's going to pay for itself with it's Eco tools anyhow.

Impero has been good for us, teachers love it (except it recording what they do at home on the school laptops), IT support find it very useful as does the management team for the audit trails.

 

There are some niggles, but an awful lot less than any other remote control software we have used over the years.

Ok, having looked at the Impero site and spoken to them I have to admit I'm impressed with what I see..

 

I'm going to BETT on Wednesday and will be shuffleing over to their stand for a chat/demo.

 

Does anyone know if it works ok with CSE?

It should do.

If you're with CSE, I'm guessing you've looked at their own product too? (I think i'm right in saying they have either written their own now... or they might still be re-badging JugleByte teach)

Yea we've looked at their solution and at the moment feel it's not what we are looking for.

 

Impero ticks a lot of boxes regarding features etc.

Alot of what Impero can offer can be done for free using various other tools.

We use ab tutor, easy to set up and use, great if you want to apply some installs to all the computers at once, log them all on from the teacher pc, send out the install and done. can also set up 2 account 1 for admin one for teacher so teachers can only control the pc's in that class room.

I agree yes some features you could use free tools but also lot of features there isn't free tools. Also you are using 30 tools instead of one. However that is more a philosophical debate more than anything.

I agree with you here Russell, We're looking for 1 tool that will do it all :-) I'm speaking to Tim at BETT tomorrow to get a full demo etc and find out more about impero :-)

Can anyone give costs for these.. I have one for Impero and the Abtutor site gives a price of around £150 ish per teacher machine... what about Netsupport and Lanschool?
