paul Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 Has anybody heard of the above company seem to offer a program that captures "ILLEGAL" activity on network and reports back to a central console, showing screen shots etc. I presume it will need client software on each workstation? Judging by the list and type of clients must be fairly well thought of.
Abaddon Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=4923&highlight=securus Lots of posts there about it. We use the hardware version here, and it works well. Yes, it needs a client, but it can be deployed via GP with an MSI.
Ric_ Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 @paul: You been hiding somewhere? Surely they have phoned you 5 times in the last year!!!
StewartKnight Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I've just caught a £100 drugs (well, weed) deal taking place between students, using email, thanks to Securus!
krisd32 Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 hi paul, We've got a securus box set up accross the field if you want to pop over and have a look you can do! works well there is a client that goes on the pc's but it is really small and in msi format already so its easy to push out! @stewartknight we've caught a few cases of bullying and that but nothing as exciting as that! Kris
paul Posted May 4, 2007 Author Posted May 4, 2007 @Ric_: My asterisk box filters most of my calls prity well I think they must have got fed up with trying as they have sent me aload of blurb via snail mail! Was just wondering what it was like as there is a load of blurb but not much substance. @Kris: I wouldn't mind a quick look, I'm not in school next week so I wouldn't be able to come over until week after.
Netman Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 @Paul Contact them direct if you want a demo unit - they're helpful and there is no hard sell if you deal directly with Securus... don't know about resellers mind ...and what's an asterisk box?
krisd32 Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 @paul: its no problem just let me know when your thinking of coming accross and we can sort it out from there!
Scruff Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I had a trial unit last year and it was a good product just a little out of our price range at the time. I would have considered it this year but the sales guy i seem to have been assigned has been incredibally impatient and quite unpleasant at times towards myself and some of our staff. As this has been my first and only point of contact with the company I will be giving them a wide birth which is unfortunate all round. Anyway back to the big battle with RIPrep.
StewartKnight Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 @scruff I can put you in touch with my sales guy if you want, he's very helpful, and keen to please too!
Scruff Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Stewart, thanks, I may take you up on that sometime in the future. At the minute I'm just too busy with trying to sort out the rest of the network to worry about it. I just saw the thread and thought i'd have a quick rant I will however send a quick email to securus if he manages to agrivate anyone else in the building =)
bossman Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 We have just tried the unit on our network and yes it has very good potential. Only thing that we encountered was quite a few false positives but i think with a little fine tuning would be a great tool to have in your "catch the students at it arsenal". The cost was far too much for our School i.e £6000 over 3 years.
amacken Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Stewart, thanks, I may take you up on that sometime in the future. At the minute I'm just too busy with trying to sort out the rest of the network to worry about it. I just saw the thread and thought i'd have a quick rant I will however send a quick email to securus if he manages to agrivate anyone else in the building =) Scruff, notice you're in Lincs. I am the Service Manager/Business Manager at a school in Lincs. We have the MD of Securus up here quite often, he's a top bloke, enough in fact that we've just gone into formal partnership with the company. Happy to put you in touch with him directly, you won't regret it. Cheers
mattx Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 You been hiding somewhere? Surely they have phoned you 5 times in the last year!!! HA - just reading this - guess who called 'AGAIN' today ? Told them we had already tried it but didn't really need it - Guess what ? Special offer time !!! Still not interested....
Geoff Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 Yeah, called us earlier this week. My NM told them to sod off.
mattx Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 My NM told them to sod off. HA - nice one. They don't give up do they...
webman Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 So, surely if this special offer is years old it should be less than £5,000 for about 200 licenses?
mattx Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I've always questioned the extreme pricing involved with this product - does anyone think they are getting value for money ?
ICTNUT Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I have been trialing this "box" for 2 months now and I am still not sure, I admit that I have not seen pricing as high as that mentioned earlier (our is around the £2800 one off with a 20% annual fee for support) but it does take some tweeking to getrid of the false positives that is for sure. I intend to keep trailing it for another 2 weeks and then make up my mind. I suppose if it was actuallt catching students violating the AUP, just get low end swearing in emails, then I could possibly justifythe cost but at themoment I am finding it hard to bring myself to part with £3000 nowing I have other more "pressing" needs.
mattx Posted May 18, 2007 Posted May 18, 2007 I am finding it hard to bring myself to part with £3000 nowing I have other more "pressing" needs. Who will have the final say in your school ? The reason I ask is that they are very keen sometimes to by-pass the NM or ICT Tech and go straight for the head / SMT.
ICTNUT Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 @Mattx: That tactic has already been used, it is thier kind of hard sell. The good news is Ihave the final say, as I report directly to the head and he respects my thoughts and opinons they generally go with them, I am also the controller of the ICT budget.
Espada Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 There is also a slightly different way to use Securus. In our school, we have a few self harmers. Some of these use a forum called Ihurtmyself now the immediate instinct is to block that sight but actually we set Securus to log every visit to that sight then any concerning posts and the names of all who use it goes to the child protection person in the school.
mattx Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 we set Securus to log every visit to that sight then any concerning posts and the names of all who use it goes to the child protection person in the school. Good way of using it but there is a cheaper way of doing that.
Espada Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Good way of using it but there is a cheaper way of doing that. Of course but it still does all its normal stuff as well such as catching people who try using these proxies to get to Bebo.
