I'm speechless really. I think this comment sums it up from near the end of the article:

 

“We have to stop children from being able to serve those sauces. Children have a tendency to use them to mask the taste of whatever they are eating.” Which, if meals in French schools are anything like those on which we were brought up, is surely the point.

I think thats a good idea. I was at Nando's with a couple of mates a few month ago. One fo them took a bottle of tomato sauce and squirted it on his chicken!! Neither myself or my other mate could believe it. Why would you cover the taste of a Nando's with ketchup?

I don't like Nando's Everyone else seems to rate it, but I've never been able to like the various ways they cook the chicken. And try asking for stuffing!

You stupeed English! At ze schools Francais we only serve ze highest qualité cuisine. It would be an insult to ze chef to cover ze garlic, erbs an ze garlic zat 'e as used on ze escargots and ze legs of ze frogs just to appease ze under-developed palates of ze leetle children! but thats the whole point of it! i use it to mask flavour of my wifes cooking (yeah its that bad but still better than canteen food...) save the kids!! leave ketchup alone!!

French school dinners are nothing like English ones, most schools have a dedicated staff canteen which will usually serve wine.

I can understand it. A few kids I know (& grown ups) have TK with everything if you let them, roast, stew, anything. They were very surprised when on camp I banned it for certain meals until they found they actually liked the food without.

 

I have heard that French school meals for staff are something to behold.

Over priced chicken in my book, chicken is chicken to me, their spice is the only thing you need a ton of.

The mrs and I both hate ketchup, but my daughter loves it, give her a little blob on the plate and she will polish off almost anything you put in front of her as she will use a small bit for added flavour. Hell even though I hate it, I use it in some of my recipes as it does add a nice background note to some dishes!

I think it all comes down to choice. Everyone has their own preference and though am not one for loads of TK (only on a fried egg) the bland tasteless food I have experienced in our diningroom, it comes as no surprise that kids want to use TK on their food.

A side issue - how come many people who don't like either tomatoes or vinegar, love tomato sauce??
