Brilliant game. Sank about 19 hours into it already and suspect I'll lose plenty more too!

I know it's meant to be very in depth so I should be looking past it, but I just couldn't get past the first few minutes of jerky animations, bad scripting and various bug like issues. It totally put me off.

PC or console? I've not had any jerky animation at all on my PC install, and I'm running it slightly below the recommended specs for CPU (but with a decent graphics card).

Sure, there are some bugs, but name a game without any when it was released.

@LiamH - it might be easy to steal things in the game, but that time you get caught? It'll cost you a tonne and you'll lose all the stolen stuff. Seems fair to me. NPC battles could be a little better, I agree, but they have never 'danced around' like you make out. Spiders come running from a good distance away, bandits work with whatever weapons they have, and that ****** Ice Troll that keeps one hit killing me? He comes after you pretty sharpish...

The menu system is superb, it works quickly, and you can favourite things easily so in the heat of battle you aren't more than 2 key presses away from that life saving potion.

And I don't know what you mean about the storyline being weak. Its pretty absorbing I'm finding!

Most over rated GOTY for me!

Got more bugs than a Indian Jones film.

Few examples...

The first village you go to in game.. you can talk to the first bloke through the gate (bearing in mind not spoken to or seen anything else) and come to the conclusion that him and some other random dude is in love with some random lass and start a side mission. If this was after some probing questions like "hey whats going on?" then fair play but you just have a dialog options of "hey you and so and so are in love with whats her face and are competing over her"

The physics in the game are just crazy, if you put a physic's engine in a game do it right or not at all. Being killed for clipping a cart with a centimeter of movement and sending it to mars and back is plain stupid.

Although funny, the fact you don't have to be very sneaky to steal the entire contents of a shop is annoying. Just put a bucket over the shop keepers head and he will continue chatting rubbish while you steal all his stuff.

the plot line so far seems extremely weak, wont reveal any spoilers.

the combat is rubbish, NPC's seem to be content with holding block as long as you do meaning you could spend 3 hours dancing around with them not attempting to kill you.

The menu system is designed for consoles, which is fine for consoles but is a PITA when trying to navigate on the PC and you keep trying to use the mouse to click rather than manually scrolling through everything.

Really hoping some patch's sort it out, or i have been spoiled by the likes of dragon age. Its a pretty game but i cant think of many more positives.

@localzuk

To be fair I only lasted an hour or so but the start seemed to be a typical elder scrolls plot start, IE a prisoner who someone for no apparent reason trusts, conscripted into random army.

The enemy NPC's i encountered were all a tad stupid, only outdone by the stupidity of the friendly NPC's that felt the need to get in the way of your attacks. No reaction from the baddies getting hit at all took away from the combat and I'm not sure aiming at specific body parts made any difference based on the fact if you hit someone in the head blood always seems to shoot out of their crotch :S

To me a RPG should be very immersive, but the glaring bugs and the lack of reaction from NPC's really take's that away. IMHO battlfield 3 drew me in more with the NPC's than Skyrim has, which should be the first priority for a RPG.

Glad your enjoying the game though, will give it a bit more time and hope it grows on me / gets patched.

Fair enough, although the minimum specs aren't that high: Dual-core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 512MB GFX. And it only needs DirectX 9c. So it should play fairly well even on older machines.

just for those who are wondering on the spec, the graphics in this game seem slightly worse than oblivion... im running X3 AMD, 8800GTX and 2GB RAM and have it on High Settings, turned down the grass fade and light fade, also have AA and AF turned off. Plays smoothly.

Oooo! Thank's for the heads up! I did wonder about this and it held me off buying, but from what you've said, I'm sure my rig will handle it no problem! :)

I didn't mean technically graphical jerkiness, I meant as in the smoothness of the animation. The characters will walk, stop, turn left, then walk, as though each part is scripted and it goes through them individually. It doesn't look fluid is what I mean.

I'm not saying other games don't have bugs, but it just irked me to see the bad animation that way.

Oh and this was on an i7 4.3GHZ/16GB/GTX580 so I'd assume that is powerful enough for the graphics! :)

Well, bought yesterday and installed! Loving it so far, just forgot how in depth the game can really get. Graphics are nice when outside, most things are high/medium with AA off and low shadows. Inside buildings/dungeons etc, it's so smooth, think I get around 50fps?

The opening into the game was awesome, just having a few difficulties getting used to the menus.

I'm not that hot on the whole Elder Scrolls lore. How does this game (if at all) follow on from Oblivion?

Posted (edited)

Skyrim is a region set in the northern part of Tamriel.. It is bordered by Morrowind to the east, Cyrodiil (Oblivion) to the south.

Although it doesnt directly follow on there are nods to the previous games throught skyrim inthe way of books, comments and characters :)

Two hundred years have passed since the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and it is now the 201st year of the 4th Era (4E 201). The High King of Skyrim has been assassinated, and the threat of civil war looms over the land of Skyrim; one side wishes to secede from the crumbling Empire, while the other wishes to remain a part of it, believing that it is still worth fighting for. To make matters worse, this schism is the final event in a prophecy foretold by the Elder Scrolls that will lead to the return of the dragons under Alduin, the Nordic god of destruction.

Well, I'm only 15 hours into the game and loving every moment of it! Unfortunately my sleep-life is suffering somewhat, which isn't good on school nights. But what can I say? Bethesda have done it again with this truly stunning addition to the Elder Scrolls series. I love the random element that the dragons bring to the game, the AI makes some pretty unpredictable things happen at times - like last night I came across a bandit's camp and then a dragon appeared and all hell broke loose as it completely toasted my enemies. :D It's easily the best ES game (the latest ES are always are an improvement on the previous release and this makes Oblivion look so archaic). It's quick to get into and seems like a fairly easy game (especially if you know what you're doing) - far easier than say Daggerfall or Morrowind, so it should appeal to novice and veteran gamers alike.

Some people keep posting exploits and spoilers, please stop, you don't need to do this. Why try to wreck what is a perfectly fun and straight-forward game for the rest of us, we don't need to know how to cheat and like I said it's not that difficult anyway. :( *rant over*

All I can say is, if you haven't got it yet then don't delay, buy it now! Skyrim is an amazing game and very very well put together. Prepare for hours of endless fun as the Dragonborn! :peace:

I bought it on 360... I don't even own a PC capable of playing modern games anymore, I love my Xbox because I’m lazy and knowing there will be zero setup when I want to play.

Saying that, I had to buy a new Xbox the same day as skyrim as my DVD drive broke. This caused a slightly buggy game play experience.

(The characters that are meant to speak to you in the cart would not and then at the end of the cart journey the horse would continue walking even though it had crashed into a wall!)

But I’m now the proud owner of a shiny black Xbox and the built in Wi-Fi is nice :p

Totally agree! Everyone complaining about bugs/glitches, they're kinda missing the point I think. The game is fun, so play the game how its meant to be played. You wouldn't put a tub on someone's head and talk to them normally, so why do it in the game and then comment about it being a bug?

Reading that just made me lol.

Week with no new comments... so how is everyone doing? im around level 31 with my elfy archer, completed the theives and companions quest along with the civil war (rebels ftw!) been mainly doing side quests and the odd main quest :) lockpicking is around 92 now

and no exploaits for me, im enjoying the game how its meant to be played!

Got a level 42 Elf mage. Done main quest up to the go to Solitude bit. Finished Mage quest line, not touched any of the other quest lines. Mostly doing side quests and trying to acquire words of power.

I did try the Oghma Infinium glitch and took my character up level 81 with 100 in all stats but I consider it game breaking as when I went outside I got owned by an elder dragon. So I reverted to an earlier save. While doing the Oghma Infinium glitch I did find that it is possible to duplicate the Oghma Infinium, which sells for about 1700 gold, so in my game I have a bookshelf full of them just in case I need money in a hurry.

I'm up to lvl 11 now. Nord archer & one handed specialist. At times, I love the game, others I HATE it! For example, I came across a ruined fort with a few mages scattered around it so I decided to clear it out for some XP. No problem picking off the mages outside with my bow, but once I got inside, one mage was standing right by the door. He heard me and started attacking instantly and two more mages popped around the corner and all three ganked me within seconds. I reloaded a couple of times to no avail so decided to turn around and escape back out the door! I managed to get outside and died instantly the mages managed to set me on fire! My auto save loaded to the point where I got outside and I was dead instantly. Had to revert back to an older save!

Also found a few caves with some hardcore vampire leaders in them. Had to be sly to nail them!

On a comical note, I was outside near a giant camp and suddenly, a mammoth appeared about 500ft in the air!!! He just dropped to the ground and died instantly!!! Made me chuckle. :)

Im having lots of fun with the Master Conjurer Dead Thrall spell. You get this by completing a personal quest for the conjurer trainer at the mages college.

see [MAJOR Spoilers] Best DEAD THRALLS of Skyrim: Who's your co-pilot(s)? for details

Let's talk natural abilities... so far, Orchendor, apostate worshipper for the Daedra Lord Peryite, is my absolute favorite. He's got a teleportation/healing ability allowing him to vanish and reappear with more health, and he's pretty much invulnerable to spells, so that coupled with life drain on his weapons makes him pretty much unkillable (even though he doesn't have any really decent armor to speak of).
