App Inventor on CC4

Hello,

 

I have created a CC4 package for App Inventor however when run as a student you cann open the blocks editor.

 

The editor wants to download and run a .jnlp file.

 

- I tried saving this file and running it independantly but it doesn't get the open project details.

- I tried creating a file rule for the .jnlp file but I couldn't implement it as the file is saved in a different directory within internet temporary files each time.

 

Has anyone managed to get this working on a CC4 (and maybe CC3) network and have any tips on how I can sort it at my school?

Have you got the relevant Java packages installed? Not sure if it requires the Java development kit. I see that somebody suggested Java on the RM Communities site also..

I can get it working if I manually installed Java DK and run the blocks part as a member of staff, but as a student is wont allow the running of Java. I really don't want to change the security for the machines. My package for Java DK fails to install, so my current plan is to manually install DK and give the students doing apps a 2nd login to us in class with teacher permissions (no shared area and I can give them student filtering)

Have it running on CC4 by giving users admin rights on local machine - clearly not the best solution and only a small number of lunchtime club accounts.

 

How did you get it working for a 'normal' teacher account?

 

We're currently looking into permissions on the .appinventor folder created on the c drive as this is where it creates the lock folders for the emulator.

We have got it working on CC4, however requires a rather large hole in the security open in order to do so. CC4 is inherently set to block .bat files from running which is effectively what the site is trying to do. Never had an issue with Staff accessing it the blocks editor, only students. Also best to use Google Chrome (if you have it installed on your network) as you will experience issues when attempting to upload or test.

Try Chrome (as MattGreaves suggested). It will always download files to the same folder.

 

CC4 is inherently set to block .bat files from running

The last time I used AppInventor I ended up converting the .bat files into .exe's (using AutoIt) so they wouldn't get blocked. I'm not sure if this will help though?

Not come across AutoIt before so will give it a try! No d!oubt I will run into problems so will be back for advice!

I have got the app inventor to deploy and have got it to start with the run-emulator.bat but cannot get the proxy setting to work. I have tried setting them in Java but that does not work.

 

Has anyone any ideas how to get the proxy in the emulator to work.

I have got App Inventor working. I have hand installed Java JDK and App Inventor software to the machines and given the students a 2nd user account that is in our Associates group, basically a teacher users with no shared or c: drives. This works fine apart from the Emulator, I cant get that to work as anyone by a proper staff or sysadmin account. Any ideas?

Allowed emulator.exe via RMMC and it now works.

 

Still getting random machines that ask what they should do with AppInventorForAndroidCodeblocks.jnlp one user it loads fine and then next lesson nothing.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, what are people using now as an alternative to App Inventor?

We were using a web based emulator, but they've stopped accepting uploads.

 

Anyone with a working solution?

My technies have got AppInventor Classic working on CC4 - but I really want AppInventor2.

 

AppInventor Classic works well - all bit a little slow at times and kids are loving it!

 

AppInventor2 is the one I want - the fact that you can connect straight to the phone via qr code is a winner for me.

 

Given that not all kids have an android and I don't have a class set of android devices, I need to use the emulator (which we've not got working yet).

I ending up biting the bullet and purchased the CC4 install pack for AppInventor 2 which basically gives you a package for the emulator and some policy changes to make to get it running for users looking to run it.

Far from elegant though!

Dropping CC4 isn't going to help you much with appinventor 2 I'm afraid.

I have packages for CC4 and Vanilla. Instructions included.

 

Main benefits:

Launcher with two big buttons, 'Open Website' and 'Run Emulator'

No command prompts.

One window for the emulator, all extras are hidden.

Config is reset each time. No pin codes, wallpapers, deleted shortcuts, etc.

Included in the package is a client update tool which can be used to update the package when the android client app updates.
