Windows update website wont work on XP SP3 - thinks it hasn't got SP3?!

Rebuilt a machine with an SP2 disc yesterday, put SP3 on and then tried updates - got this failure.

Put IE8 on, and also ensured local time on the machine was correct, restarted and all OK.

 

But, my next move was good old wsusoffline/ -

I download the fix and ticked the "aggressive" option. It re-downloaded some bits and then restarted the PC.

To my suprise it actually worked!

I had one last night, let it run automatic updates and a few reboots later seem to have solved it.

 

Any ideas what is causing it?

Getting this on 3 different images now, and cant get past it like last time

 

Will setup WSUS, although that was planned as a job to do at the end of summer, when all the urgent stuff like imaging had been done

> Right click on My Computer

> Click Properties

> Click on the Automatic Updates tab

> On the bottom click on the blue underlined phrase that says "Windows Update Web site."

 

I don't know why that works for me but it always does.

We had this.If we installed from a CD that includes SP3 we got those

errors. If we downloaded the latest SP3 from MS and installed that it

works. Me thinks they have added something to the SP3 that is online

that isn't on the disk.

 

Anyway that fixed it for us

We've been having the exact same problem with some laptops we've been trying to create a new image for - I was able to get onto the Windows Update site on them fine last Wednesday morning when I was testing something, however by Wednesday afternoon it was coming up with the redirect page.

 

I've tried all of the fixes in this thread as well as installing using Windows XP SP2 and SP3 cd's (and upgrading to SP3 with the SP2 cd), and nothing seems to be working! Quite frustrating as we were hoping to be using the laptops for some wireless testing this week...I was hoping that Microsoft would have fixed it over the weekend, but it still doesn't seem to be working..

 

Just came across this problem when trying to update an XP SP2 VM to XP3 - I ran the windowsupdateagent30-x86, rebooted and now it seems to updating OK.

Running the windowsupdateagent 3 update seemed to fix it for us as well (have tried it on several machines both with and without sp3, and it fixes it each time, so despite the page saying windows updates won't work without the latest service pack it does still work with sp2). For some reason it kept coming up with an error saying it couldn't run the agent fix last time we tried it, but this time we ran it before installing anything else and joining our domain, and it worked fine.

I've just come back from three weeks off and got caught by this rebuilding an Admin pc. I ran the Update Agent and that got me on to the Updates page, but after the first 4 updates had downloaded, the rest failed dismally.

 

I eventually got it all working by installing the 'Microsoft Update' Add-in and using that instead of Windows Update.

 

Whoever said it's M$ pushing Windows 7 and 2008 has hit the nail on the head, I think.
