Hmm.. but if you did is as the user then the previous user would have deleted their own settings when they logged out anyway. I'm a bit old fashoined. I think allowing someone to delete someone elses stuff is fundamentally wrong. I know if my settings were deleted by someone else I'd be really miffed. I know I might sound a bit picky but this seems to be an accident waiting to happen. If you really want to do it, I thought it's like this:- ALL ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: /path/to/your/script.sh YMMV having never done it - test with care :-) Mal

All our Linux machines ( 350 + ) do their logins via a LDAP server so we can hot desk

We are GNU/Linux for students and if I have my way eventually everywhere, but it isn't easy. Technically it's fairly straightforward, Linux is more robust, easier to support, quicker and a lot easier once you have go the hang of it. The difficult bit is the people! In a way I admire MS they have done an excellent mind job. If you went Linux you will have conversations like this :- 'Windows crashed - it must be something I did' 'Windows crashed - it must be my machine' 'Windows crashed - it must be something the IT guys did' 'Windows crashed - it must be the Internet' 'Linux crashed - Linux sucks'. For us, we spend roughly four times as long supporting 160 Windows machines as 500 Linux ones.

Some years ago I vaguely remember that the 'here today and gone tomorrow' politician of the day decreed that all schools should have a VLE. Ignoring the fact that they can be quite useful, do we actually have to have one ? Ta M

For want of a better place to post this... I was wondering if other schools have reliability targets for systems. i.e. percent uptime of the core systems, number of failed PC's etc and if so what do people expect ? Ta M

I got the user and group mapping to openldap ( ie rfc2307bis - openSUSE ) to work quite well but it was a nightmare. I can send you what worked for me if you want. We only do Linux here so if it's AD then I'm lost too M

We have tried ownCloud and we have never got the document preview/edit to work that well. Even though we are a LibreOffice place the documents often don't display correctly in ownCloud M

This is probably a really dumb question but I have just put windows 7 on a machine with a smartboard and the pens don't write they select - is there a howto for windows 7 somewhere .... Ta M

We had this.If we installed from a CD that includes SP3 we got those errors. If we downloaded the latest SP3 from MS and installed that it works. Me thinks they have added something to the SP3 that is online that isn't on the disk. Anyway that fixed it for us M

The workstation service seems to die quietly. I've been through the event log and there is nothing. If I log in and out repeatedly ( sometimes it takes 20-30 ) goes everything work fine then on the next login I get system error 67 and the services show that the workstation isn't running any more I could just set it to restart on failure ( which works ) but it wouldn't get to the bottom of the issue and it would takes ages ( unless you know a way of pushing that change out via group policies ) M

Don't bother restarting your servers - I did that Friday and it made no difference I am now 99.9% certain it's the workstation service falling over I just don't know why - It could be set to just restart it but that wouldn't explain why We are doing some new images with SP2, SP3 from the CD and SP2 upgraded to SP3 It only started after we started using the SP3 install disk rather than using the SP2 install disk and running the update M

No, I take that back. If I try and map a drive once the failure has occurs it say my workstation service isn't running. Looking in the services shows it as stopped What's killing it I wonder M

Once you have logged in you can surf, ping and connect drives to your hearts content ! It's just the net use in the login script M

System error 67 The network name could not be found The batch file is running as the 'echo' I put in and the pause so I could read the messages are there - it's just my 'net use' bits don't work Then if I reboot the box it'll work fine ;-( M

the login script is in windows/sysvol/blah/blah/staff.bat and is replicated around

I have tried:- Recreating the user account - improves it but doesn't completely fix it Delete all the users Documents and settings and their application data - doesn't do a whole lot Use IP addresses in the login scripts instead of names - also doesn't do a lot either I am now trying sync login scripts and don't detect slow networks When it doesn't work I just get 'network name could not be found' even if I'm useing IP addresses. A reboot and it works again Let me know if you get any more ideas please Ta M

Mine started happening after I moved staff home directories to a new 2003 R2 server I am running a test today as I had an inspiration this morning ... I'll let you know what happens M

Yes, Mine only has 2003 servers. Sometimes the mapping works and sometimes it doesn't - With students it's about 1 in 50 logins , with staff it's about 1 in 10 Same thing, reboot and the first login works OK. Have you got XP SP3 ?
