CAM Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 We have Sky Sports for the speedway coverage and their commentators are utter garbage. Who hires the PR officer for one of the league's clubs as an expert and regular commentator? I expect the same to happen with their F1 coverage. And adverts. More adverts. I like the BBC covering sport as you get no bloody adverts.
mattx Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 ....and the problem with SKY adverts is that they go on for 5 mins sometimes - thats about 2.5 laps on some circuits. It was bad enough on ITV when the adverts came on - it's going to be complete and utter sh1te when SKY get it. It could be worse though - Virgin Media could get it....... Anything with Branson's involvement is just as bad.
mattx Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Just of interest, does anyone watch F1 on their 'mobile device' ? Can you actually see what's happening ? BTW - I almost bought an ipad yesterday - that will shock some of you.......
localzuk Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 BTW - I almost bought an ipad yesterday - that will shock some of you....... Oh dear lord! The end of the world is nigh!!
mattx Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Oh dear lord! The end of the world is nigh!! It almost was for my wallet.....
john Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 So an *entire channel* catering to different segments of the country should be scrapped to appease a single market? The entire budget of BBC4 is around £54m a year. If that is the sort of money that is being spent on F1 coverage, I'm glad they have come to this new agreement! Yup that was the cost of the F1, well maybe not exactly to the £ but i read something online that was basically scrap BBC4 or keep the F1 as they cost the same. Its not cheap you know and all the botox and makeup costs money for Jake If they did less repeats on BBC3 that would free up space and time for the good stuff from BBC4, so im not saying just kill all the shows and the channel, kill off some of the junk from the main BBC channels and then use that sapce to move stuff around and then slash some of the random junk that gets pittance of viewers for something that gets many millions. Now we can do product placement in the UK TV sector the Beeb can bring some cash into that, so stop covering Jakes iPad in plastic and stickers to make it un-ipad like and let it be an iPad and charge Apple a fortune for it, or get an Android slate from Archos and stick Tweetdeck on it job done etc.... Good Product Placement could bring the beeb a lot of money back into the pot, get them in overalls like they did on ITV and have sponsors on them thus more money for the Beeb. Where there is a will there is a way 1
mattx Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Think I may stick up my own Sat dish and point it to the Astra 19.2E - FREE feed [ ok not in HD ] but FREE. [ I think ]
russdev Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Sky will not run adverts through the race... No adverts during races on Sky - Yahoo! Eurosport
Andrew_C Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Seems Bernie needs the cash rather than the free to air. Anyone else seen this gem? Bung sir? That'll do nicely!
sted Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 but surely less viewers means that teams are in a weaker position to renew/gain sponsorship so less money coming in that way as i cant see viewing figures going any way other than down so splashing vodaphone all over the car will reach less people so be worth less and sponsors may just leave entirely
speckytecky Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Not if you are there! Monaco is one of the dullest GPs. Just another reason for me to follow the advice of a well known kids show in the 80's. "Why don't you just switch off your TV set, and do something less boring instead."
AyatollahPies Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Not if you are there! We're on about watching it on TV sonny.
GrumbleDook Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 The present flavour of BBC TV & Radio channels is a pretty good fit to cover pretty much everyone. People moan about the Beeb paying artists/entertainers too much then complain when people move to other channels because there is better money there. People moan that things like comedy is stifled because it has to go through lots of hoops before it will get agreed to produce a series rather than the old system of a friendly controller giving something the nod ... Yet if stuff is made without being checked on by assorted people then people moan about money being wasted by risking massive flops. The Beeb is on a hiding to nothing with some people ... so given a choice of making cuts to channels and major shows they have to cut their cloth accordingly. The Beeb have made massive changes to try and save money, at the risk of losing out in other areas. The move to Manchester was painful ... and consolidating production centres was painful too. Losing half of live F1 is a loss ... but is still better than losing a whole channel or radio station. 1
iMash Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Well there's a petition up and running as I expected against this. Petition for totally FREE-TO-AIR Formula 1 from 2010 - Petition Online - UK The 2010 title is wrong but I'm sure the bloke who started will be able to correct that (despite it being hard coded into the link to the page). If anyone is interested I'm sure it cant do any harm if it gets a fair few signatures.......
synaesthesia Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 That's the 40th petition I've seen so far....
synaesthesia Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Also, noone has noticed that Bernie etc is breaching the Concorde Agreement about airing full races on FTA. They will be losing MASSIVE amounts of viewers. They will be losing MASSIVE amounts of sponsorship money.
iMash Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 It's the second I have seen. But it seems to be the one gathering pace quickest. And it will take one getting ahead of the rest before it becomes "the one" as morpheus would say.
synaesthesia Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Pirelli are really kicking up stink about it - the crux of their story is if it doesn't work, they're out in 2013. A lot of the teams are voicing concerns but many of them are being paid off to comply which doesn't help. I can see this being canned by 2013 entirely.
featured_spectre Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 30% of sponsors have said they will pull out if it goes full PPV as they will lose too much revenue as well. Good one Bernie, I hope the bungs were worth it. 1
Jamman960 Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Whitmarsh sees positives in Sky deal as more details emerge - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com "The BBC will show every grand prix in full, half of them live and half of them deferred, so free-to-air is available to everyone." - sounds a little better I'm guessing they could be on the red button though which would make recording an issue... hopefully they'll be aired at a decent time
synaesthesia Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Let's look at the one positive to this. Now Sky have the rights, not only we will get the team radio, we'll get to hear their voicemail too. 2
speckytecky Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) Silly me - I sit corrected Thanks OLD MAN!! Anyhow my TV is a Panasonic We're on about watching it on TV sonny. Edited July 29, 2011 by speckytecky
john Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Also, noone has noticed that Bernie etc is breaching the Concorde Agreement about airing full races on FTA. The Concorde Agreement ends in 2012 and will not be likely to be replaced it seems online sites are saying so its near enough not to be affected by this change, plus by having highlights on FTA its fine so it seems
MYK-IT Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Plenty of comments from upset F1 Fans on the BBC Sport's Editor Blog: BBC - Sport Editors: New F1 deal explained
synaesthesia Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 The Concorde Agreement ends in 2012 and will not be likely to be replaced it seems online sites are saying so its near enough not to be affected by this change, plus by having highlights on FTA its fine so it seems Indeed, it would appear they are able to bend the rules by having this highlights deal in place. And yeah, hell of a lot of reaction from fans, all of it the same. F1 will go downhill very quickly. Friend of mine really hates Coulthard and Brundle which is a bit daft, a world of experience there. He was excited that, having Sky Sports, he'd not have to put up with them. I upset him late last night by pointing out that they are also providing commentary for SS next year too.
