Dos_Box Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 I found these by accident just now whilst doing a bit of looking up on Time Computers. Rmember them? Anyway they are (were) based just down the road from me and teh factory shop was amazing. Ever wonder what happended to all of those surplus 'bonus' software and games packs PC's used to be bundled with? Yup, the Time factory shop would sell them in huge boxes for a £1 a pop. I once got a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick brand new for £10. I've still got it in fact I digress. When looking them up I found these sites still up and running: TimeUK.com : Buy your flat screen TV factory direct Computers, Laptops and Plasma Screens from TimeUk.com Time UK was a company that sort of carried on once Time Computers went belly up about 2004? If you look at the date at the bottom of the site and spec of the PC's and TV's on sale there (as well as the prices!) it makes you wonder if they left a server on somewhere when they all moved out!

Shame the same could not be said for the first PC I ever brought from them in 97, a Cyrix 200Mhz beast with a whole 64 MB of SIMMS Then my brother showed me his PII 400. I cried.

Well, I only used P75 to show how affluent I was, I started with a 486SX 25, a friend got a 486DX 50 before I get the P75. I still remember paying out the £80 for a 4mb upgrade for the 486!

But just like all of the other UK computer manufacturers, they suffered once everyone had brought a PC, and Dell etc realised that if they dropped their prices they could clear up. Are there any 'large' UK founded computer companies left now I wonder? Mesh went into receivership last month, and I think that was the last one.

Dos_Box Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 Strictly speaking, they are not home computer manufacturers as they, along with RM and Viglen, are still occupying niche market postions, but to be fair, in the long run their business model seems to be working a lot better than those who chased the PC gold rush of the late 90's - early 2000's.
maniac Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Anyone remember Escom? I had a Pentium P75 with a whopping 1GB hard drive and 8MB of RAM from them in about 1995. Windows 95 had not long been out and I was the first person in my class at School to have a PC running it, we were amazed watching all the little Video clips contained on the CD. Cost at the time, About £1300 with a 1MB ATI graphics card and a 14" Monitor. Wasn't long after that they went bust!

About the same time as when you bought a computer magazine, the centrefold (ooer!) pages were always black and green for Aries PCs. Few pages in, always a black and white Gateway advert. I think that Watford Electronics, a company who I shamefully admit that I worked for many years ago, bought the rights to the Tiny name after Time went titsup™. I don't think what's left of them is manufacturing PCs any more though. Probably a good thing.

CAM Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 We owned a Tiny computer back in 1995 and it was cannibalised for parts after being replaced. I used the speaker system, incredibly good and brilliant bass on it, until about 2008 when I replaced it. The kit lasted ages, was still good quality and was only replaced after it's last legs gave way. We fired up the base unit later that year too and it still worked, Windows 95 and all.
