fiza Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Oh guess what the SPRING release was rolled out yesterday via Solus 2 and now the EXAMS module is broken on all the PC's that have SIMS.net ! And the LEA say they've never heard of this issue before!!!!!!!!!!! Laughable Happens to us everytime we upgrade using SOLUS2. Luckily only 2 machines use the exams module. No one has provided an acceptable solution to this.

Sadly our exams team like to roam around the school so expect the exams module to work wherever there is a SIMS installation....

It's because the user needs administrator rights to register the old COM files, the answer is to use SOLUS3 as the S3 agent service does the installing rather then the user.

From a mail from LEA about SOLUS 3 from November 2013! "Solus3 is a project I am looking to start, I have just finished the documentation/testing for SQL 2012 and I started migrating schools this week, so I am hoping to have more time to look into getting Solus 3 up and running possibly within this Academic year. I am attending a meeting tomorrow where I will be able to get an update on Solus3 issues experienced by other LA’s and will factor this into my project. So watch this space…"
matt40k Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 @apearson Nov 2010 - it's official, we were at least 3 years ahead of our time!!
Mark_Atkins1 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 If you haven't got SOLUS3 you could always script SIMSApplicationSetup.exe from the Setups folder to run as part of your group policy when the machines start up using an account that has permission to overwrite the files in the SIMS .Net folder as I assume you have resolved this by doing this process manually.
kennysarmy Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Oh look the same issue as always post the Summer upgrade! Jeff, Since the upgrade, I can't access the exams module in sims. Usual problem. Can you fix it please? Sue I'll be expecting lots of these mails today....FFS!
PhilNeal Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 @kennysarmy - this error is caused by someone keeping Exams open during the upgrade. SOLUS3 should deal with the problem.
kennysarmy Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 @kennysarmy - this error is caused by someone keeping Exams open during the upgrade. SOLUS3 should deal with the problem. The upgrade was done last night at 9.45pm - no one was on site. We don't have SOLUS 3. Regards
ITGURU Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Capita told me they couldn't replicate the issue which is why they have been unable to provide a fix, apart from reinstalling the workstation. Also, whenever I do SIMS upgrades, no users are logged in and the SQL TCP/IP is always disabled so that only the server can login to the database, thus preventing the issue where users try logging in whilst the upgrade is taking place. @kennysarmy - this error is caused by someone keeping Exams open during the upgrade. SOLUS3 should deal with the problem. 1
PhilNeal Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 @ITGURU we can replicate the issue when someone is still in Exams. Sometimes people don't realise they are in Exams still
kennysarmy Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) @ITGURU we can replicate the issue when someone is still in Exams. Sometimes people don't realise they are in Exams still ? All our workstations shut down over-night....using power management software. I can tell you now - this has been affecting us for every upgrade for years - and there is no way that every time - someone has managed to stay logged in to a PC and be in the exams module - for a start there are only one or two people who use that module! I'm not saying you are not replicating the issue in the LAB by having someone remain in the exams module - but there must be other causes.... I'm more than happy for you to have an engineer available for our next upgrade to prove that all exams modules are shut down.... Edited July 8, 2015 by kennysarmy
Gatt Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Blimey - Considering I left ~4 years ago I'm amazed that this is still happening!
matt40k Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 @PhilNeal you need to poke @kennysarmy LA into rolling out SOLUS3. His still in the dark ages
kennysarmy Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 @PhilNeal you need to poke @kennysarmy LA into rolling out SOLUS3. His still in the dark ages Email from LEA dated 11/2013: Solus3 is a project I am looking to start, I have just finished the documentation/testing for SQL 2012 and Esther and I started migrating schools this week, so I am hoping to have more time to look into getting Solus 3 up and running possibly within this Academic year.
zag Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 This error has just come up again!!! how can it not be fixed after all this time? 5 years and no fix other than re-installing is getting a bit silly. We are using Solus 3 and everything has been upgraded fine except the exams module. I can confirm nobody was in the exams module, (or even Sims) at the time. CC @PhilNeal
kennysarmy Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 @PhilNeal you need to poke @kennysarmy LA into rolling out SOLUS3. His still in the dark ages Things happen slowly in Gloucestershire.....although after the current post it seems even SOLUS3 does not fix the issue.....no one can replicate it you know
Sam_Brown Posted January 29, 2016 Author Posted January 29, 2016 Wow... just realised I was the one who made this thread in the first place. Jesus... this thread if almost 5 years old and the bug still exists...
kennysarmy Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Wow... just realised I was the one who made this thread in the first place. Jesus... this thread if almost 5 years old and the bug still exists... SIMS can't re-create the issue, therefore no problem, everyone move along please....
vikpaw Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 If you can't recreate a problem in the middle of your own AD Forest then it didn't ever happen to anyone anywhere.
PhilNeal Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Please log cases. There were 14 cases logged in the last 6 months all of who were using S2.
vikpaw Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 The best thing to do is log a pre-emptory case and get support to watch the process of update from the beginning, showing zero connections to the server. This would "prove" it happened under their gaze. Then see what they think.
