Who is your favourite?

I had never been to a comedy show before, so I went to see Billy Connolly at the Sydney Opera House. Though Id open with a bit of a big yin!

Since then Ive only been to see another comedian, Danny Bhoy, who although another Scot, I had never heard of in Scotland! Seems he is massive here in australia..

To continue the pro-Scottish comedian loving, Frankie Boyle is a legend, and I really hope Kevin Bridges makes an appearance out here at some point.

There are a couple of the english ones i find funny, Michael Macintyre, and theres another one whose name escapes me...

BBC - Comedy - Live at the Apollo - Danny Bhoy - Noah's Ark

Any other local / international talent I should be looking out for?

PS: a thread like this wouldnt be complete without this legend

I went to a local comedy club in Birmingham last month, and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Out of the 4 comedians, I enjoyed Tom Wrigglesworth the best but Doc Brown had a bit of a musical slant to his act which was good. Trevor Crook was an Australian, but didn't find him very funny at all.

I enjoy a lot of the comedians who appear on the panel shows - Sean Lock, Rich Hall, Hugh Dennis, Ed Byrne and Milton Jones too.

Liking John Bishop myself at the moment, he often features on Michael MacIntyres comedy roadshow.

Billy Connelly is an absolute legend. Agree about Milton Jones too.

Also find Russell Howard pretty funny too.

Not a proper 'stand up' comedian but funny none the less is Tim Minchin who is my comedy choice just now. Mark Watson is another. Robin Ince, Mark Parker and Helen Arney are amusing too.

Ask me again after August though and I will have more :)

I really admire John Bishop, he had me in fits at the London Palladium and Blackpool on Michael MacIntyre's road show.

Excellent delivery and just down to earth with real live events that make both sexes laugh. :)

Billy Connelly used to be a favourite of mine in the early days but went off the boil.

Steve Hughes - currently doing the rounds as the support act to Reginald D Hunter. Both good but Steve is IMO better (although this time round, his stint was too short).

Stuart Lee. Worth seeing live if you can, but otherwise get hold of "If You Prefer A Milder Comedian Please Ask For One". Then again, I love dour, deadpan stuff. Some don't.

I quite enjoyed Imran Yusuf's show recently, the low numbers in the venue didn't reflect the relatively high quality of the material.

Sarah Milligan is well worth seeing in a live show - low brow filth mostly but extremely well done.

Finally I always enjoy Jeremy Hardy's live shows. He does tend to move his material on slowly, so you need three shows before it's all new; but his cynical view of the world is funny and sometimes thought provoking.

I managed to execute a superb heckle at a Frankie Boyle gig in London not so long ago (managed to get Kettering a shout out from Frankie 'afore he took the stage) Thought I'd get murdered for it.

Other than Mr Boyle I absolutely love the work of Doug Stanhope, Brendan Burns, Louis CK and of course Bill Hicks. Oh and George Carlin is a firm favourite.

Oh and as a final thought - SARAH MILLICAMP IS NOT FUNNY!!!!! I have no idea why she is everywhere at the minute, she couldn't make me laugh if she handed me tonights winning lotto ticket...boo this woman.

Definitely, especially with his deadpan delivery!

Newman & Baddiel (am I showing my age yet?)

See that old woman over there? That's your girlfriend that is!

She doesn't (IMO) come across well on guest slots but her live stand up show is quite different (well, the three I've seen have been) and that's where she excels. We are talking about 'stand up' - quite a different thing.

Only a few years ago was a well respected UKHH MC, equally gifted with comedy I find

Often go to a theatre in Cambridge called the Junction which is part of the "club" scene for new comedians to make a name for themselfs. Some good ones recently were Jimmy McGhee and Tom Deacon.

Got tickets for McIntyre in 2012 but today bought some tickets to see Mickey Flanagan for November. Flanagan is hilarious much more so than McIntyre was when he first started so I am looking forward to that.

It's all down to personal opinion, I've watched her numerous times doing stand up (Apollo/gala etc) so far she's the only act that is outperformed by Jo Brand (In my opinion..of course)

Very true. I just find her stand up shows have been quite 'intimate' and slowly engaging. Slots on the HIGNFY or even 5 mins on the utterly dreadful (IMO :-)) M Mcintire's Apollo things don't really suit her. If I'd only seen her on those I'd probably be more of your opinion; but I don't really regard them as true stand up; the first thing a comedian does when they come onto the stage is gauge and 'bond' with the audience. Those shows don't really allow for that.

Sarah Millican is very funny, as is Dylan Moran, Rhod Gilbert, Robin Ince and Bill Bailey. Lenny Henry is very good live.

Huge fan of Russell Howard and Frankie Boyle but my firm favourites are Billy Connolly and Lee Evans.

Quite frankly though some of the stand up acts these days are brilliant - stand up in general appears to have gotten some real talent and really is funny, unlike any "s*itcom" you're likely to find aired on TV.

I do however miss the real stand up talents of Rowan Atkinson though. I've heard people compare Lee Evans as a hyperactive version of Rowan but quite frankly Mr Atkinson is a class of his own. If you describe any modern comic as "deadpan" (even the admirable Milton Jones), you'd have to describe Rowan as "deader than a cemetary-pan". Plus, walking proof you don't have to swear every other word to get a laugh.

I must admit a little guilty pleasure is some Jasper Carrott stuff - a lot of his material is from a shared pot of generic jokes most often dipped in by the rather cack Jim Davidson (and even Billy C has been known to dip into that pot) but I think it's just his accent that adds a little something ;)
