m25man Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Getting files to and fro is no big deal, there are loads of ways todo it but always remember these were designed to be personal media devices, networking and filesharing were not a primary design function. You load them up with stuff and take it with you... anything you forgot you can get from the web. A PC however it certainly is not! I rarely leave home without my iPad, but the netbook always gets slipped into the bag when there is a proper job to do! You cant run BackTrack on an iPad (mores the pity) and theres too many packets out there that need sniffing.....

Guess you might know.. it used to be called a mini-hub, but are there any cheap and dinky little gadgets you could insert between anything and a GB netpoint that will just mirror the traffic to a port for netbook/laptop/IDS/whatever i.e. save you fiddling with the switch? Or is there some mini-GB switch that will do it?

SYNACK Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 GoodReader seems to be a pdf reader Si It's not a computer, its on an app by app basis and as far as I know unless they have changed it there is no centrally accessable file system. Its an Apple product so its all under their lock and key, iOS5 is apparently better as they advertise that you can finally use it without a 'real computer' so if it takes his Jobsnesses fancy there may be better support for stuff like this in that if profitable for Apple. 1

Si you can view documents, images, play music, pdf. and yes you can copy to and from your shared drives to the ipad. you can create folders. there was a few things it couldnt do that i found annoying especially on my head teachers i pad, as i installed one of the office products on there and there was no way to save a document typed in the product to the file browser folders. but that was back in November last year, so i would hope by now other products are working with file browser. I need to do some updates to file browser as im a little behind.... 1

Si would also suggest you read there site if your planning on getting file browser I quote: FileBrowser is able to connect to a wide variety of SMB file servers, but some are not compatible. I've also used this but it was a 3 way solution. 1 teache i know uses team viewer but leaves there laptop left on at work, the other teacher I know purchased ignition and does the same, however I'm not too keen to have these laptops left on at work and soon impero will control all machines in the school which will shut them down in the evening. The other thought is possibly installing HAP (home Access Plus) on a server at work and then using a browser to connect to it. but for me the simplicity of file browser is enough at this stage, whats a couple of quid....

ronnoco Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 We are looking at deploying iPads. We have just brought our first one and have been experimenting this week. We use HAP for remote access and so far, using HAP seems to work reasonably well on an iPad. You can download or open in a new tab most common file formats. You can upload photo or video straight to the Staff Public drive - you don't seem to be able to rename from the Camera Roll or from HAP once uploaded which is annoying but in general, this could be a decent way of accessing the school network. What I like the most is we simply added the server IP that HAP is installed on to our Ruckus wireless ACL which means this can be accessed via the guest WLAN. The only devices they can access is the Smoothwall box and the HAP server - which solely runs HAP.
