InspireICT Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Does anyone use any form of internal messaging system to send messages to/from the school office to teachers in class? Was thinking it might be a nice idea to have a client on the teachers PC similar to Windows Messenger that pops up if there's a new message from the office (or from another teacher). Preferably free Also preferably a system which is strictly for internal use only, so Windows messenger would not be a solution. Thanks in advance.

maark Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 If you have exchange then it is very quick internally and outlook will popup an alert - but expensive if you do not have it.

I looked into this sort of thing a while back (but didn't find anything anywhere near as useful as the suggestions above). The primary reason for it was so that the office staff could ping the teachers to remind them to log into SIMS and do their registers!

Registers are a legal requirement! you need to remind teachers how to do their job by messaging them! FFS
mrverrall Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 My choice would be an XMPP server like those available at jabberd14 or jabberd2 XMPP is the same protocol that Google Talk runs over. Once you have a server running you can you a whole bunch of windows clients (e.g. pidgin) to send messages as well as have group chats. I think this is the only answer so far that addresses all of your requirements, * Internal messaging system * Client similar to Windows Messenger * Popup alerts * Free * Strictly for internal use only

Ric_ Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I <3 Lync... it's the dog's AFAIK the Lync Standard CAL will soon be part of the core CAL pack too and the server license is cheap under subscription licensing. BTW - I assumed that we were the only school with the register problem
