PEO Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 We've just purchased Game Maker 30 licences and i need to deploy to a computer room. I've tried creating an msi file of it but failed miserably. Does any one have an msi of it? Cheers Kev
PEO Posted May 24, 2011 Author Posted May 24, 2011 bump* why the flip does game maker install 90% of its application files in the users data application folder. This is ridiculous!!
mole Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Also tried to get this working for students - awaiting a repsonse from the exam boards (as they recommend we use it) tech people. that was 1 1/2 weeks ago.
ChrisH Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Have you tried the one mentioned here: GM81 Education - YoYoGames Wiki It works by the look of it but you need to use the other application to license it. I was looking to run the free version but this version only works if you license it grrrr!!!!! Running the 8.1 update on our current 8.0 install only seems to work for the account that it was installed with very annoying. 1
PEO Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 ChrisH, I've asked yoyogames who knows how many times and they never seem to give me a straight answer. Thank you for this mate!
TheScarfedOne Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Ive got a working MSI for the version 8 (free) if its of use to anyone? 1
ChrisH Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I only found it by accident, unfortunately it doesn't fix my issue as we are running free. It installs okay into program files but it wont run without a license and therefore will not run for me and the update doesn't seem to work even if you install it into program files. Just searching for some kind of registry entry now. 1
PEO Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 I'm installing for the first time on my machines so I should be OK 'Cross Fingers and Toes!' Just waiting for the licence stamper from them then I can have this pushed out. Their support is normally fairly quick. Thanks for this mate. I was literally in the process of planning the distribution using scripts and creating shares. it would have been a right mess.... shame Techsoft don’t write the software! People wouldn’t have this ridiculous issue! lol
ChrisH Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I have got mine working for students now for the free version. Even if you install to Program files every user needs a copy of the files that get put into the users appdata\gamemaker folder else it will just run in update mode. So now I will have to create a logon script just for that room to copy in the files on logon. I tried altering the installer but it didn't like the changes I made. I was starting to think some of our software restriction policies were affecting it but I ruled that out with a clean user. If anyone is using using Gamemaker and has SRPs to to them launching EXEs from zip files etc in the temp directory you can enable quick compile to work by unrestricting the following path: %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp\gm_ttt*
K.C.Leblanc Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I took the easy way out and installed version 7.

I found it kept changing the name of the gm... folder - so I made it use C:\GMTEMP and set the SRP on that. Too many malware programs use \Local Settings\...
ChrisH Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 I messed with the ini file but decided on this in the end. Everything else is blocked anyway as this is an exception.
PEO Posted June 13, 2011 Author Posted June 13, 2011 I sent game maker a helpdesk request asking for the licence stamper and still waiting for a responce... getting a little annoyed with them now.
PEO Posted June 15, 2011 Author Posted June 15, 2011 Finally got the licence stamper. it comes in .exe format but when exectuted it opens a cmd window.. I decided to open it in notepad to see what the code is like and I can see details refrenceing the the purchaser, school name, and a key code. Apparently they have to custom make this which personally seems mad, why cant the ship the software with an application which allows you to create an mst for it? any how im about to go and test it to see if this works.
DrCheese Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 oh.. oh god I've been asked to install this for a student. The posts above don't fill me with happyness
mole Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 I've heard nothing back from exam board tech people. that was 09/05/2011. i dont expect to know.
gillop Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 One of ICT teachers went on a course and wanted GM 8.1 installing, after much fustration, it worked for the teachers and not for the pupils I logged a call with YoYo Games and got the following reply: | Hi Paul | | Thanks for getting in touch. This is a common problem with Lite on a network. | | For classroom use, the full version (not Lite) can be installed using an MSI. The version we provide for personal use by the students at home or outside of class on their own machines does NOT work with an MSI and must be installed on each PC as it uses a secure DRM that needs to be authenticated to the hardware. GM81 Education - YoYoGames Wiki `--- So the teacher is now going off to price the full version.
tech_guy Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Thread Resurrection Time! Stupid question probably; but how am I to deploy the msi to workstations in AD using a GPO when it needs /i GameMaker-8.1..msi TARGETDIR= on the command line?
mcloum1 Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I have just had to deploy this at my last school. I managed to create an MST that installs GameMaker to "C:\GameMaker" as the MSI just unpacks to the folder it was ran from with no folder structure! I have hosted the MSi and MST on my SkyDrive if it helps anyone out http://sdrv.ms/YEk0Gb Unfortunately ive not found a way to package up the License Stamper so this will have to be a manual task until the schools image can be updated. Hope this helps someone.
silver_uk Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Worried now as the boss wants to use GameMaker on the network for September 2013. Wonder is Studio Standard with work...
ClevaTreva Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Hi All I apologise for resurrecting this thread, but i wondered if you have, or know someone who does have, an Msi that installs the free version out to a Windows 7 RM Connect 4 network? We used to have WinXP and RM Connect 3 and we managed to make an Msi that worked that (each user has a networked documents folder, but no write access to the local drive). I am getting a bit desperate. Trevor
burgemaster Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Just been asked for GameMaker 8.1 Free on the network. You are correct that the msi TARGETDIR switch doesn't work. It just unpacks it in the folder the MSI was stored in. I even tried editing in Orca but still the same. YoYo games I told them about it but they said they will look into it, this seems to be a problem with old out of date software they probably cant be bothered to fix. I also found out that 8.1 needs to be purchased. The free version isn't suitable for school use. Not sure what to do next.
mikecain Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 we bought game maker with an educational site licence, cost about 2k though, came as a download all in one folder, just dropped it on a hidden shared drive, dew tweaks of the settings in appdata folder and it was up and running. we never got and msi`s or anything. i never did get the trial versions or free versions working either, but they still bought it. wasnt the worst install i have ever done, pearson testing steals that accolade
DrCheese Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 pearson testing steals that accolade haha touche.
