Hi all!!

Just a quick one! :)

We're a High School and have just become an Academy and of course we now

need to run our own internet connection.

Filtering etc is fine as we already use Smoothwall, but its just the internet connection

that is needed.

Looking for up to 100MB leased line and was wondering if anyone has a leased line installed and can recommend any good isps?

Cheers!! :)

BT are now doing a 3 and 5 year contract which includes free installation costs, they have a variety of pipe sizes based on 100Mb bearer and I have heard that they will take that bearer up to 1Gb if required and then whatever bandwidth you require i.e. 10Mb, 20Mb, 30Mb etc and you can increase within the contract at a very small cost.

We are just looking at this at the moment.

Also very reasonable costs PM me if you want as I don't want to put them up for all and sundry so to speak. :D

Yep we went with BT as there were quite reasonable, we also got the offer of double whay you buy, so we bought a bought a 10Mb connection but pay for 5, we had to pay for installation though. Yes you can buy a big pipe and restrict it to reduce you what you want but increase it as necessary.

Expect to pay 14-16k for 100mbit from those suppliers mentioned.

Why are people not posting prices? It will help people get the best deals if we know how much each of us is paying. I know the companies are very flexible if you ask to match their competitors.

Pricing will depend on your location and how far it is to the ISP's point of presence etc. Therefore, while something might be 5K for me it could be 10K for you. So posting prices is pretty useless.

Our LA are happy to provide an internet connection for those schools in the area moving over to academy status for the same cost plus 10%.

Isn't that a contradiction in terms ;)

The LA will be adding the 10% to cover management charges, billing, vat charges etc... ours is doing something similar I believe.

We are happy for all our academies to stay with us, they can go directly to the RBC instead if they want. When people say the LA is putting the price up it is usually that the cost has previously been subsidised or covered by the LA or any grants (in part or in full) and there is not the money to do that anymore. If you want to hear me rant about why Mr Gove is right about Capita grants followed by why he is so wrong, and about how it is then twisted about to cost schools and LAs more money then you all know how to get me going at the conference!

We use Global, they were the cheapest but we area local to one of their data centres.

Never except the first price as the final price.

As for leaving the LA you dont have to, but we found the LA were actually more expensive over a 3 year period.

We had this "deal" 3 years ago or so, with "free" installation. They came out and did a survey then came back with a list of "additional charges" which basically came to around the cost of the "free installation". It appeared that the free installation is really a free connection charge.. not installation. On a positive however the service form BT has been excellent and an upgrade from a 8Mb on a 10Mb bearer upto 60Mb on a 100Mb bearer was quick and painless.
