Its very shiny and you will like it, but as Ben has said its being slowly rolled out to the masses so it will arrive in the near future to you :)

We're getting it out - very slowly! As its a big change, some we've been continually taking feedback from the first bunch of folks, some of you will already have the first run of updates which are needed to support G3, these will hopefully go fully live in a couple of weeks, and during that time we'll keep adding new g3 users.

Sure i'll be contacting a few peeps soon to say "hi, you got chance to do a bit of an upgrade?"

Just wondering... I've only got two days "free" at half term if it was going to be available by then. After that the next free time I would have for a major update is summer. I'm just trying to work out what I can do when.

Cheers anyway.

Although its a major update, I wouldn't see it like taking down your entire LAN, it will go on like a normal Smoothwall update does but will need some checking and tweaking post-update I suspect, certainly beta version did :) So you could probably do it on a late night stint.

If thats going to be a good time for you I'd suggest speaking to Tom and seeing what they can do.

As far as the actual update as John says shouldn't be too intrusive apart from some Internet downtime for users.

It's _probably_ doable on a "late one", but i'd suggest making some time to get to grips. If there's a specific time when you want to do it, as plexer says... giz a shout (or one of the support guys) and we'll try and accomodate - this will get easier as time goes on :)

To be honest I would like to do it. However a my two day window is a little tight for me as it doesnt leave me much time for other things if I'm going to spend a day upgrading and learning how to use the new g3. If it was available I may do it but because I've only got a little window of free time I'm not really wanting to "queue jump". Late July probably going to be the best time for me.

I asked Sean about the possibility of us having it for last half term, but he said it's still not 100% ready to go but we could have it if we wanted but but I decided not to upgrade and held off. We will probably be looking at next half term for the rollout as it will be nearer to the final release then I would imagine.

Is this the one with the driver support for the HP micro servers? I am waiting for this release, any chance I can be bumped in the list so I can get my second smoohtie installed?
Posted
@simcfc - which driver is it that you need updating? There are new drivers in this release, however it will be a little while before what we have released, and is being trickled out, makes it onto a new built ISO image. This means it might be "quite hard" to get your micro server working just yet, as you'd have to at least get the disks & network recognised before you could install the relevant update IYSWIM.

Its the disk controller I am waiting for, I have a case open which told me the new driver would be released in a couple of weeks.. which was a couple of weeks ago.

Anyone got any screenshots of the new interface? I had a quick play at BETT but that was a while ago.

Basically I had discounted smoothwall because the interface was too complicated. I'm testing the Sophos web appliance at the moment and its amazing how good something can be when they have a "3 click anywhere interface" so it would be interesting to know if the smoothwall update makes it as easy as this.

The guardian interface has been improved a lot with 3 step wizards to set things I wouldn't say it's 3 click anywhere but it's a big improvement.

I'm not sold on "3 click anywhere" personally - i'd rather have 4 clicks that make sense over 3 that don't :)

The G3 interface makes some stuff really easy - for example blocking and allowing sites. Setup is always going to be slightly more complicated than some, as we offer so much choice in authentication, for example. There are still some points where our interface isn't as i'd like if i'm honest, but G3 represents a good step forward, as did last year's new Auth setup.

Sure someone here would be happy to give you a dem.

The Smoothwall guys do a great Demo, but if your desperate I could show you mine if you want / send you some screen shots if Tom's happy for me to do that.

@john; yeah, happy for you to do that. Are you on a release version yet, BTW? :)

eer a few behind I think, and its still on the testing box rather than a live one, nothing's looked different to the end user although I know under the hood its changed a bit, if its too far out think it was from around 30/3 the release im on I won't share and let someone else offer it out :)

The upgrade to G3 will be via an upgrade applied to the box so you won't need to wipe and re-install it. Although you will need to do some tweaking of it after its upgraded due to new features and how it handles some things, although nothing to onerous from my testing of it :)
