Last time I looked at slax was when it first came out and was a live cd... Slax is just a distro of linux isn't it?

Thought so. So why would there be a server edition of a live cd which is based on another distro which was pretty much server oriented??? Or am I just missing something? (I spose, Ubuntu is a desktop distro made from debian which is pretty server oriented, and then later changed into a server distro.

 

Just seems a bit pointless... :-P

Well, I don't know to be honest. Apparently.. 'Slax Server comes with pre-configured DNS, DHCP, SAMBA, HTTP, FTP, MySQL, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and SSH.'

 

I recommend Ubuntu for anything - desktop or server, it has them both covered. And releases are roughly every 6 months, not 6 years (looking at you, Debian! :twisted:)

 

If you're looking for a Slackware-based distro for the desktop I recommend Zenwalk - it's rather good. I used to use it but couldn't get used to linux life without the trusty apt-get with Ubuntu The repositories aren't as big as Ubuntu's and the package dependency resolving isn't as good either. But if you're not lazy like me - it's great

Yeah. I just can't get my head around a server version of slax... *scratches head*. Stick to Ubuntu I say. Or if you want to be different, CentOS.

Yep. Our mail server (+web) currently runs CentOS, solid as a rock

I use ubuntu server for my linux servers but i use debian testing for my desktop OS (if not using windows).

 

I love aptitude, but not so fond of ubuntu desktop anymore....dont know why :S

Slightly baffled by the poll and the strange question... not used slax, but used whax which was based on it - basically a wireless-hacker's variant. Think it may have joined another project now tho.

I have to jump on the bandwagon a little here and agree that ubuntu is my choice for servers. I still have a slax CD though, it works well on my laptop which has had problems with other live CDs in the past.

hi chaps i heard alot about ubuntu as a great bit of opensource software does it play nice with windows 2003 servers? should i be looking to implement it on a new server i'm about to source? or is it purely for a linux environment

The bit that plays nice with Windows is SAMBA and Winbind, which is available for all linuxes and BSDs; providing it's configued correctly. There's an entry in my own wiki and even Ubuntu's own wiki detailing the procedure for joining an Ubuntu box to an existing domain.

Ive used backtrack based on Slax full of alsorts of security auditing tools. Infact my laptop dual boots it with XP.
