envy Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Afternoon all I have just joined this community, on recommendation from a school IT administrator that I have been working with, to complete my final year dissertation for my ICT degree. To give you an overview, I am producing a dissertation looking at Education and the technologies that can assist with learning and reducing cost. I have completed my theory and practical based research into areas like Virtualisation, Thin Clients and the Cloud. The next step is to research other Educational IT Infrastructures, and the challenges IT Administrators (and schools) faced. Therefore I was aiming at collecting some information, to enable me to discuss these issues in my final report too. My findings are available to all, when I complete my dissertation and hopefully it will assist with improving some educational IT infrastructures. I would be very grateful if you would complete the short questionnaire I have produced. It only includes 10 questions; it does not ask for ANY school information and will not be used for anything but the purposes of my dissertation. It should take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. The questionnaire is aimed at people working within an IT department, for an education institution. Any questions or thoughts please let me know
envy Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 (edited) Heres the link to the survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CMSHPLN Thanks to anyone that takes the time to complete it (remember 5 to 10 minutes, 10 questions) Edited January 14, 2011 by envy Fixed Link
Fatmas Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Done it mate, I know what it's like at this time of year for third year students so best of luck! 1
jamesreedersmith Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Done But thes questions are not very good - i am guessing your dissertation is around why more green technology is not used in school and all your questions lead to those answers being given, you have not allowed for t people who have and do and make great progress with green technologies and people who do not see any barriers etc. 1
envy Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Thanks to the 10 responders so far, it all helps with content of the disseration
envy Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Hmm, i take your point on the questions. I wanted to add in more, but i had to pay for anything more than ten questions. I surely hope people are not 'led' to the answers, i am really aiming for the pros and cons of Green, and also looking at schools with great green technologies. For example, i was reading a paper on Queen Margaret University (from memory), where they had planned a campus around Thin Clients, and saved £1m on Build Costs (due to natural ventilation and lighting) with £100k savings per year on energy costs. I would be grateful if you feel your school has made good progress, and cannot get it across in the questions, to post your views and also your thoughts. I really do want to see and hear all points of view, the disseration was aimed at assisting education and schools.
SYNACK Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Done, wide ranging questions but you should get some good results from them. Best of luck with your dissertation. 1
pete Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Done. Bear in mind for schools it's "save cash" of which "greener" is a by-product. 1
amyr Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 done, good luck. remember this time of year well when writing my dissertation. I'd be interested to see/read the results you get 1
RabbieBurns Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I found it hard to answer the questions too.. I answered NO to question 2.. I did not realise virtualisation was classed as being Green However I answered YES to question 3. I am virtualising due to the simplificaiton of management, both in hardware and software. My concernes for the environment never entered my head. Also, I ticked YES to the power management, but again, that was without any consideration of being Green, but simply of saving money. To be honest, after answering NO to the first question, the rest were irrelevent. I dont konw of Green Technologies, and its not something I have thought about. Im not Anti Green.. I just dont know anything about it. 1
RabbieBurns Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Done it mate, I know what it's like at this time of year for third year students so best of luck! I did my dissertation in 4th year.. does england only do 3 year degrees?

By conslidating your infrastructure, you can reduce on power consumption (in theory). I have managed to get hold of three servers, so i will be doing some power tests to see whether Virtualisation does offer any considerable energy savings. Again, i will include this in my main report. Thanks for completing it though
Fatmas Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I did my dissertation in 4th year.. does england only do 3 year degrees? There are 4 year degrees, most of which have a year in industry as part of the course. Most Bachelors degrees however are 3 year courses. 1
Hecate Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Done it. But I agree with RabbieBurns any greening is a by product of cost saving not a consideration in itself 1
envy Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Thanks again to all responders, so far i have gained 27 responses and it provides some really useful information.
