siadam Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Currently (don't laugh) we are only backing up to a ext drive, nightly, then monthly doing a dvd backup. Of course this has gotten VERY tedius, b/c the dvd's are starting to stack up. This is all going to be changed. Not sure of the scheduling as of yet. Looking into purchasing an RD1000 to handle the long term archival. Schedule ? Mon-Fri: Nightly Incremental Backup Sat: Full Backup, offsite. Thoughts? Any advice is welcome.

Monday to Thursday: incremental Friday: full We have a two week rotation. Also we use Volume Shadow Copy for recovering user files that go back a few months (I can't remember the last time I had to get any files from the backup server)
pete Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Mon - Thurs: incremental to backup caching server. Fri - fulls to backup caching server. VMs either get snapshotted (appliance / box), or standard backup (DCs) Databases get fulls every night. The caching server syncs backups to the remote backup server (external building with fire gap). We keep the two latest backups on the caching server and everything else (including a copy of the two latest) on the remote backup server. Caching box which lives in the server room is a generic Dell tower with 2TB and the remote box is a QNAP with about 11TB after RAID.
nicholab Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Disk backup in no good for long term storage. It is great for rapid turn round but with 3TB for a full backup we are using tape this means I can go back to 2.5 year when the system started. We have a daily, weekly x4, Monthly x3 the 3rd monthly becomes archive and never over written we have 48TB of data in storage!!

dwhyte85 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Drives are not as robust as tapes, drop a tape.. it'll work, drop a drive you might be in trouble. Drives have connectors and bits that can be broken, although it doesn't affect the data it can be a pain.... tapes are easier to store, less environmental worries - but I guess that depends how you'd store the drive. Tape (in the sense that someone has to stuff the autoloader / library, rotate a tape out to offsite storage) isn't as reliable as disk simply because humans are involved. If you can afford a robot or have an autoloader attached to the remote server that's less of a problem. Whereas disk (in the sense of remote server, rather than using disks as removable media) doesn't require any human intervention beyond setting up the backup and retention schedule. Less moving fleshy parts = less scope for problems. And your sacrifical goat budget can be lower if you're not so dependent on tape.

Id be happy to make a recommendation if required What online backup do you use and what is the cost like?

Large company and if your backup software can't work directly with S3 (lots can now) then you could use something like JungleDisk to get just the data you need into the cloud
stew_the_it_guy Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 We use Gigasoft for data backup. System State for the DC, all data, and profiles. Backed up via the internet every evening (apart from the DC which is weekly) I can also restore remotely and from the users PC if needed. After the initial masive seed load it only takes 10mins to backup each night. However I do have an external drive which takes a Bare metal, system state etc.... every evening. Just happy to have a working decent backup solution.
