I appreciate the responses guys. I have been told the exact opposite, that tape isn't as reliable as disk. Thoughts?

Currently (don't laugh) we are only backing up to a ext drive, nightly, then monthly doing a dvd backup. Of course this has gotten VERY tedius, b/c the dvd's are starting to stack up. This is all going to be changed. Not sure of the scheduling as of yet. Looking into purchasing an RD1000 to handle the long term archival. Schedule ? Mon-Fri: Nightly Incremental Backup Sat: Full Backup, offsite. Thoughts? Any advice is welcome.

Your just trying to make yourself feel better for dropping $ on an out-dated version. The guys here listed the reasons on what you need to do, if you don't want to listen, carry on.

I've heard rumors of that as well, but we all know how quick VB is about updating and/or creating new software. Just figured this would be something nice for the forums, and is free on the backend for you all. It's really a great software package for the end user and makes browsing the forum on your mobile device a breeze.

What type of compatibility issues are you referring to? Typically it's just a DNS/DHCP/File server. No real software really runs on it. This is not for a school.

As the title says, ordering a new server. All desktops will be Win7, and laptops are WinXp clients. Is R2, the server OS to get, as opposed to just 2008? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ok, here is the workaround I found. I went into the Win7 machine, and using print management, added the print server as a server, and uploaded the driver from there. However the users were still not allowed to install the printer, b/c it would shut down the printer spooler on the machine. So I added everyuser to the admin group on the local machine, logged in with each user and manually added the printer. Worked, then removed them from the admin group, tested, still works. Long process, but it corrects the problem, unitl I'm able to purchase and rollout server 2008.

I need to add additional drivers to the 2003 server, but when you click on additional drivers, it doesn't have anything for vista/win7? http://siadam.com/stuff/2003.jpg The printer see's the share, tries to install the xp driver, which is known to cause the print spool service to fail. I'm thinking if I had the correct driver installed on the server, it would pull the correct one.

Well, right clicking on the printer in the directory listing, and connecting was a quick work around, but today I started to log into each user and seeing if it would work, and no. Seems from more research it's a 2600n issue w/the driver, and stopping the printer spooler service. Argg!!!!

The problems I've seen with roaming profiles is b/c the users would store alot of data on their desktop in folder. So it would be forced to transfer this data back and forth and tie up the network/server. To combat this, I started using quotas, which stopped them from storing an inordinate amount of information, however it didn't remedy the speed issue. Instead I created a personal shared drive for each user, and instructed/trained them to keep their data there. Not only does this remove the stress from the server by not forcing it to download/upload at every login/logoff, but keeps all their important data in one place, allowing for easier backups and such.

Do an inventory on the machine. Figure out what essential programs & services you require and what you expect. DNS/dhcp/AD/etc. Remove any unnecessary software, and stop any services you feel aren't required. I would strongly recommend doing a complete backup, and doing a little @ a time. That way if anything is incorrect, you will know what caused it and be able to repair it quickly. 2nd on defrag, you would be surprised how fragmented a hard drive can get. You can schedule this to run weekly as well.

Well, the 2600n was purchased w/o my consent a few yrs back, so it's what I have to work with as a "backup" printer to a 4600. The 4600, is going out for repair as soon as I get the 2600 up on the 3 Win7 pro 32bit machines we have. I can login as a domain admin, or on the local machine, and it sees the printer shared from the 2003 server, and I can install it. I log off, and log in as a regular user and the printer is not listed. If I try to install it through the "Add printer wizard" it errors out. I just tried browsing to the printer with a regular user, and right clicking on the printer in the AD directory and clicking "connect" and it just installed it, tested and works out. However, I REALLY don't want to be foreced to login with each user on the machines as we have roaming profiles to install the printer for each person. Anyway for me to install it globally for each user on that machine, even if I have to do that on all 3 machines, beats installing it for each person across all 3 machines.

First off, I want to say I have NO affiliation with Tapatalk, I am just a happy user of the service, and would like to notify the admins of this site (assuming this is a start, or someone can point them to this thread perhaps?). I personally use this as an admin on a local VB forum, and as a user on another forum. When I signed up here, and saw it was a VB site, I looked to add it to my device, and it wasn't there. So I figured I'd make a post, and thought this would be the best place. It's a FANTASTIC app that allows browsing and posting to the forums in an easier and more organized fashion. Setup/install is literally a breeze, and requires almost no time on the backend, other than downloading a package and uploading it to the forum root. Security is a non-issue, and they are always releasing updates/etc so the product does not become stagnant. They have apps for iPhone & android devices w/more to come. You have 2 versions for the end users, free/paid. The free version allows read only access to the forums, while the paid version allows the user to post from his/her device. The cost to the forum to install the software is FREE. They have their own forums as well, so you can download the app and check it out for yourself to see how well it flows and works. Just something I'd like to bring to the attention, I think it would be a wonderful addition to an already great site. Currently running 2003 w/SP2. I've got 2 printers shared from the server, that all clients can print too, Primary & a backup printer. They are both mapped to the WinXP machines and work just fine. I cannot get the backup printer, which is a HP 2600n, to install on the Windows 7 Pro machine for the domain user. Win 7 is a 32bit machine, w/the proper 32bit driver. If you login as a domain admin, or local machine admin, you can install the printer and use it, you login as a domain user, and the printer is nowhere to be found. How can I install the printer globally for the users of that machine, so they have access to the printer. I also have to unpack the drivers on that machine in advance, b/c the server 2003, doesn't have an option to install additional drivers for a Win7 machine. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Similar issue when we switched to a Win7 machine, called the helpdesk, they sent me to the site, downloaded another install package, turns out I had been using an out-dated version for some time. Worked fine.
