So.. I'm getting the train down to Portsmouth tonight (from wakefield) to visit my brother in law on the HMS Manchester.

 

I always drive everywhere, so am dreading the journey, how easy is it to get from Kings Cross to Waterloo? I think I've got a prebooked tube ticket (is there such a thing?) but I'm not sure!

Kings Cross to Green Park on Victoria

Green Park to Waterloo on Jubilee

Hi Dom

If you take the Victoria Line to Euston which is one stop you can then get the Northern line Direct to Waterloo, which is 7 stops.

 

Make sure that you take the right branch of the Northern Line as it splits at Euston.

First Capital Connect: Kings Cross -> London Bridge

South-Eastern: London Bridge -> London Waterloo East

 

Cross the footbridge and you are there.

 

*Definiton of scenic depends on how much you can tolerate building works and graffiti covered viaducts.

From experience, I would take the Victoria to Picadilly Circus and then the Bakerloo to Waterloo. These are shallow lines so you don't travel so far down and up anyway, and the change at Picadilly is easy.

Not really... there is a day ticket, but unless you're returning the same day a single journey is cheaper. Buy from the machine at the station or invest in an Oyster card (£3 deposit and some credit).

No, I'm only doing it on this occasion as I don't think it'd be legal to drive back after keeping up with a bunch of navy blokes drinking! (and I've got a lift sorted on the way back!)

 

Public transport up here is rubbish anyway, so would only consider it for a long journey, which I don't do very often...

I wouldnt bother with an Oyster Card, not worth the extra expense if you dont use the tube/bus that often.

 

As for Pre-booked, no such thing on the tube, and as for getting a "reserved" seat, they dont exist. Best advice is to stand at the end of the platform, most people huddle in the middle and hence more likely to get a seat on the end carrages.

Just got a 15 minute free trial of east coast wifi... it's taken about 10 to load this page! I would have bought it if I'd not trialled it first... Fools

Shame its usually really good Maybe the "new & improved" wifi isn't that good I always used East Cost to get to London due to free wifi in all classes but am starting to change my mind now its all paid for as its lost that attraction. Although if booking far enough in advance First Class can be very good value

Drive, so much easier and book a night in a Premier Inn to sober up.

 

One of the easiest drives I do is to Hampshire from Lincolnshire, do it several times a year.

I would have preferred to drive, but its worked out a lot cheaper to get the train down, don't have to worry about parking either now. Last year I drove from Leeds to Canterbury every weekend to visit my (now) fiance @ uni, so I don't mind a long drive!

 

When I arrived @ Kings Cross today, the bloody tube was shut so I ended up getting a taxi to waterloo... thanks anyway for all suggestions!

That is an epic drive, I did it from my house (near Lancaster) down to Canterbury for a holiday and it was about 7hrs each way! madness

 

Glad you got down safe, annoying when bits of the tube are shut, you can usually just walk to another station and grab it at that / use a different line unless the whole thing was suspended. Kings X station often gets shut to incoming at peak times as it can get very congested in the halls.

Yeah that is pretty far, you should try Inverness -> London though, better give it several days

Ouchey! Not fun don't fancy that, I did from my house to Bexhill on Sea the other month and back in a day and that was a long day 700 mile round trip but was a nice day

East Coast used to be free, I think they've only recently brought in the charging again.

 

I believe if you change your IP and spoof a fake MAC address you'll get free wifi for the whole journey .. but you didn't hear that from me

Too late now for the original request, but for anyone else wanting to travel in London English - Journey Planner - Transport for London is brilliant

 

@dom_ - obviously far too much money if you think getting a London cab is a good idea :-) There is a direct bus from KX to Waterloo which would cost you £2 if you're paying cash (and should have accepted your tube ticket if the tube wasn't running)
