No world cup for England... I blame the BBC personally!

If it was the BBCs "fault", then it makes the licence fee worth paying.

To whoever said Russia is cold, it has a 'continental' climate, and will be VERY hot in the summer. The whole thing is corrupt, why are we surprised the Mafia didn't spread a few bungs around?

Having been in Moscow in summer with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees I can vouch for this, it was also humid as hell at the time and sucked the energy out of you! Corruption is so rife it's unbelievable, I kept seeing BMW 7 series etc. driving around with blue lights on the roof and thought they must be diplomatic cars or something? Turns out if you have enough money you can 'buy' the right to use blue lights and tank it around wherever you like which is ironic given what a lot of the people in these cars do for a living.

If it is good to build 1-2 new stadiums in England it must be really good to build 13 new stadiums, a road network, high speed rail links and stamp out racism and corruption in Russia

Stamp out corruption in Russia? The names change but the lies will stay the same..

I thought Russia would get it because they have never hosted it before. I'm shocked. at Qatar getting it over Australia though.

Footballers are overpaid and underworked who don't give a fig about the people who come to watch them week after week they just want the money fullstop.

I am so pleased we didn't get it as we wouldn't have heard the last of it for the next 7.5 years, we can now get on with our lives, football has taken over too many people's lives and too much of the television its getting worse than the soaps!!

Footballers may be overpaid and underworked, but they are ultimately entertainers - if anyone has beef with them earning so much then surely they should also have beef with actors and TV presenters.

As for football taking over peoples lives - yes, it does. I love football. It IS my life. It's the second most important thing on this world to me. I pay good money for my Sports packages - if you dont want to watch it, then dont buy the sports packages. Corrie will be on the other channel.

It seems odd that people seem surprised that a patently corrupt body (FIFA) award something to a patently corrupt country (Russia - see the wikileak stuff for confirmation of that) - if you want to be in the game - you've got to play it - either bribe them more - or jump sideways and set up a clean alternative. Its like the problems that arise when we find out that our defence/engineering firms bung countries backhanders to get massive contracts - wise up - its the way of the world - a few million buys a few billion & keeps people in work here.

What's new about it? Just a reworking of religion.

Nooooo, religion causes hatred and war!

Football causes hatred and fights!

Oh wait......

FIFA have the best judging panel money can buy.

I think it's high time for a breakaway World Football Association, which will embrace assistive technology for referees and will go out of its way to demonstrate that it's above corruption. They're not playing fairly and we should take our ball home - we invented the game and we should run it properly. And charge a royalty to FIFA for using our rules.

My $0.02 (albeit it tongue in cheek)

Wow, nice to see so many dedicated footy fans! :)

I must admit... Qatar??? Over Oz???

Anyways, regardless of this, the BBC somehow will still feel justified in ruining this for us, getting just 2 votes I believe, obviously the judges were not pleased suddenly (when apparently we had fewer issues overall that all the others in terms of infrastructure and funding etc).

If we won... then the BBC says it forced FIFA's hand

If we lose... the the BBC says it exposed the truth

I think I'd rather have won (then exposed whatever), as a thorough football fan.

So you're ok with corruption as long as you get what you want from it? I put principles above my love of Football.

Not at all, but show me one institution that does not suffer in some way with wrong doings? This is the way things are working, so why not make the best of a bad situation? Everyone else has and does. This is why we never get anything decent.

The alternative is to never try and host it again? Coz lets face it, Panorama is not going to change football!!

I've got an alternative. Form a "three nations" with Spain and Italy and stick two fingers up to FIFA. All the other leagues are a joke anyway*. We invented it, now we're going home and taking our ball with us :D

Not that Italy and Spain and indeed ourselves don't have their bad bits lol

FIFA Statute 2 Discrimination

"Discrimination of any kind against a country, private person or group of people

on account of ethnic origin, gender, language, religion, politics or any other

reason is strictly prohibited and punishable by suspension or expulsion".

Who do they give it to? Russia and Qatar!

England did not prepare in the right way though. They are only on 7/34 Committees at FIFA and have made no effort to make 'friends' turning up to the Bid Process with the best bid and some Celeb's / Politician's and telling everyone how great you are only makes it more likely not to get picked.

Interesting. Remember about 2 years ago when there was talk of England moving away from FIFA altogether, now there would be an interesting idea. Best league in the world, and no Sepp Blatter!

At least Qatar have said they are going to give all their Stadia to Africa after the World Cup

Wow, edible stadiums eh, at least the vending machines and water fountains will help ;)

Well said, Steve!

This was my thought, once the actual announcement was out of the way. It has become clear over the last 20 years that FIFA and UEFA just do not like us.

Michel Platini, wondrous footballer that he was, has already stated (on many occasions) that he would like to bring English football down a peg or two. You could almost hear him choking on his croissant when the Premier League had 3 out of 4 teams in the Champions League Semi-Finals.

It is time that FI(MA)F(I)A was taken out of the equation. Let's start a new federation, with completely open voting systems.

And whilst we're there, take the Australian megalomaniac away from the rights to Premier League football, and return the game to the people!

Ah English football...

If England Win: The fans beat everybody up - and blame someone else

If England Lose: The Fans beat everybody up - and blame someone else

So no surprise then that when they lose the bid.. they blame someone else..

Personally, I jumped for joy (scaring the bejesus of my fellow motorists!) when they lost the bid.

But not because I hate football.. (which I do - with a passion!)

But because its bad enough hearing about 2012 , and how much its costing us (and people moaned about the cost of the Scottish Parliament and the (now) O2 Arena!?!)

I dread to think the hype that would have been created for 2018 - especially being in Manchester!!

And how much would it have cost us?! a substantial amount more than the £2.1Bn we "lost"..

As for blaming the corrupt... we can hardly yell corruption when our own MPs are filling in expense claims for friggin Bog Roll!

Yep, no FIFA or UEFA, just the mighty FA! :D

I wouldn't trust the FA with a kids party......

AND, they are probably AS corrupt as FIFA!

A rather simplistic view, there, from a non-football fan. If you bothered to do any research, you would discover that Italy, Germany and Holland ALL have bigger hooligan problems than our country.....But it IS so much simpler to go with a stereotype. If the media say we're the worst then don't bother finding out, just trot out a few lines and wait for the applause.

Do you not think there will be reasonable amounts of hype from Brazil for the 2014 World Cup? And as for Qatar in 2022....I expect the hype machine to go into overdrive.

I, for one, cannot wait for the 2012 Olympics to be held in MY country. I am PROUD that we put ourselves up for these tournaments, even if we don't get them.

Boris has made himself look an even bigger fool than usual by spitting his dummy out and refusing them a free stay at the Dorchester during the Olympics.

One has to ask why you would feel the need to offer a free stay at a 5* hotel to such a cash flush organisation like FIFA. Oh that's right, it's called a bung!

Yep - england this .. 1966 that.... "it's definately coming home [to England] this time! We was robbed!

Actually, I think having the Olympics is a great thing.. but like everything else, we'll over charge.. we've already overspent!

And as always, the focus is on London - Yes ok thats where its taking place.. But WHY just there, why not spread it around the UK? There are great facilities all around the country, it would have generated so much more income and interest!..

What this country NEEDS to sort out first, is getting this nation (All of them - England, Scotland, Wales, NI) into a position where we are FANTASTIC at all sports.. But we're not.. we dont have any decent venues, we are too bogged down in PC to be competative (Sports day now "Fun Day", etc)

Start involving the other UK nations more! Especially the Olympics where we compete as "Great Britian"..

Sport should be FREE! it should be readily available, it should be encouraged in schools.. It got better at the last Olympics, but we are still hav a long long way to go.. Once this country (GB) can gets its finger out from up its own backside and actually motivate people to take part.. THEN we may be in a position to get people like IOC, FIFA, etc to look at us more closely,

Whether we are the worst for Football violence or not, we should take steps to tackle it - it doesn't need to be all "lock them up and throw away the key", but a little more of the geting theinvolved in sports..
