What an afternoon!

Went to the shop at lunchtime to get some lunch and when I got back 10 minutes later, the whole school had been evacuated...just before I went to the shop I could smell gas, so reported it to the school office. They rang the gas board and spoke to smt and their advice was to evacuate.

 

at 12.45 the whole school was taken to the next primary school up from us (about 10 minutes walk away), whilst i stayed behind with the office staff and redirected parents and waited for gasboard and fire service....at 2pm they gave us the all clear and that there was no leak, then we had to take all of the kids coats up to them, redistribute them and then they all came back to school for home time at 3.15!

 

i'm glad thats all over! the amount of work done this afternoon...0, standing around in the cold....1

 

anybody else have an exciting afternoon? oh yeah, I'm only just getting round to eat lunch!

As for my afternoon, I have been sitting in my cupboard (otherwise known as the server room) designing some posters. I'm very lucky to have a cupboard actually, most primary schools don't have one (admittedly I have yet to see a school that they have had to resort to shoving the servers in the corridor).

well they did give curry to the year 5's last week when we were away on an outdoor activity trip.

 

it was the parents that shocked me as they were complaining that we evacuated the school whilst their son/daughter hadn't had their lunch! well tough, its better that they're child is safe and hungry than full & blown up!

Don't be so sure - I did some work with a primary school last year and the server WAS in the corridor.

And another where the server sits in the corner of the ICT Suite. First thing I did within an hour of starting work there was attach DO NOT TOUCH signs all over the box and the console!

THey do get staff trying to log onto them as work stations. I would not mind but the IT techs have a large office and wont put them in there and wonder why staff try and use them.

I store mine in primary schools in the staffroom, tends to be on a VERY high shelf that teachers (as most primarys are very female staffed) cannot reach, a lot cannot even really reach to put the backup tape in if its an internal drive

 

Anyway, just the usual crashing hardware etc, IP connectivity issues the usual

You work in the ICT Suite? I'm not sure I could do that, I find if I am working in the same room as the kids they distract me to no end. Whenever I accidently wonder into the ICT Suite while there is a class in there, it's about half an hour before I get to leave again due to "problems" with the programs that they happen to be using/typos in web addresses etc.

It's a catch 22 situation really isn't it? Lol. If you ignored the smell of gas, people would have complained if the school blew up and killed everyone inside. They would also complain about safety regulations if you just ignored it even if the school didn't blow up. As it is, you spoke up and potentially might have saved the lifes of all those children and all people can do is complain?

yep that's about it...they complain that they are safe and hungry or they complain as they are full and blown up...can't win either way!

 

i hate working in the ict suite...had the chance to work in the headteachers office yesterday whilst trying to speed up her laptop and it was soo peaceful...not one "can you just...." (favourite phrase in my school when they see me..."can you just set up the whiteboard ready for my lesson" can you just set up the projector in my mobile ready for my science lesson" can you just...)

I am either in a cupboard that is within the small photocopier room - no ventilation, no windows, very health and safety conscious - Or I am in the ICT room behind a little bit of wall that hides my server from the kids!

 

I prefer my little room as I can sit quietly and do some repairs, testing or whatever (I actually have enough bench to put things on) although it is a little claustrophobic. But I just put The Archers, Brahms, My Chemical Romance or the Chilis on and get on with stuff.

Working in the IT suite is a pain - I get a lot of " are you busy, because...." as I am fairly visible.

It's particularly annoying when you're sitting there surrounded by screws, wires and assorted dismantled equipment, wielding a screwdriver - 'No, I'm not busy, I'm just doing this for fun!'

Our office/workshop/server room (ex classroom) has a door with a window (now covered with paper so nobody can see in) and it self-locks when closed.

So, when the going gets tough, or we need to get something sorted without interruption we can retreat in there and ignore the knocks on the door........

Hahahha, that reminds me. I was with my network manager a few months back in this office and we were taking a couple of broken computers apart and swapping components around trying to get one working computer and the headteacher walks in, took a look at the pile of components on the bench and the dismantled computers on the floor, stared at us and said "Are you doing this for work or are you doing this for fun?"
