Bombarded with Job Offers

This might seem a strange thing to say, but I'm getting a little fed up of phone calls offering me various jobs.

 

I keep my CV up on Monster and update it periodically (about once every 2-3 months, sometimes longer if I've had a lazy year!), as you never know what might come up.

 

My last update was early September, and since then I can tell my CV has been viewed on Monster in the region of 70-100 times, and I have recieved 4 Job offers by email, and some 40+ by telephone.

 

Most of them are either silly locations (40+ miles away), contract work, or not enough money to warrant moving jobs. I have only said yes to 3 of the offers so far, 1 turned out too far away for their liking, 1 i got to interview but trumped by someone with more corporate/ITIL experience, and the 3rd was only this morning and wont know till the end of the week.

I've even been offered jobs directly (aka not via some silly recruitment agency) by HP, McAfee (I lol'd and sent them back a ridiculous offer), and 4 multinational companies, and the highest salary I've been offered so far was 35k + pension, healthcare and bonus.

 

Am I alone in being bombarded with job offers? Do I just have an especially good CV (For a guy with no IT qualifications, and 5 years of working in schools), or is this a sign that the economy is recovering? A year ago when I last updated my CV, I got maybe 10-15 offers in 3 months, so far I'm around 50 in 5 weeks, and still getting a phone call per day.

The job I was unlucky with yesterday, I've been told that if I'm still looking for work in 6 months or so, they hope to expand the team and hire some new staff, so I might get a job there.

 

I'm curious to see what others experience is at the moment.

Show us a copy of your CV then and let us all share in your wealth and good fortune But seriously I applied to one of these CV companies, think it was on Monster. They ripped my CV apart and sort of pointed me in the right direction without any up front fee. I'm in the middle of re-writing it, so hopefully these job offers will come flooding. I'm not getting interviews let alone job offers.

 

I recently signed up with an IT agency and i'm hopeful so far had one telephone interview within a week of joining them.

 

One tip is to keep a track of sites you have uploaded in txt file so you can remove your details at a later date otherwise you will get endless calls.

 

Are you looking for roles in education only or casting a wider net?

The IT market isn't recovering just yet! Lloyds TSB, for example, have announced they're gonna be sacking about 3k workers in the UK in their IT dept.

 

Then look at the UK govt, the IT depts of local government and central government depts are going to be hit too, as well as all those quangos.

 

No, I think its the case that you're getting a lot because your CV must be good.

Where I've put silly text where a date should be, I would normally list the month/year of start and finish, eg November 2006 - October 2008

 

I've even kept my grades on there from my GCSE's, because I'm o-so proud (aka not bothered) by them!

Does Monster let you set minimum salary requirements / distance variables on your account these days?

I'm thinking of putting my CV on Monster et al. just see see what kind of interest I'd get. I enjoy my current job more often than not, but there's no career progression.

yep, it does appear as if 'back office' functions are a favourite when it comes to recent headline job losses. But then i presume these jobs have to either be offshored or outsourced. Ultimately it comes down to what your IT skillset is and the demand for any specialisms you might have, i suspect some specialisms are quite difficult to offshore.

I think a lot of the current crop of losses are simple reductions in workforces. Lloyds, for example, are doing their cuts due to their HBOS merger. The government are scrapping a lot of the things they previously did - not simply transferring them to departments etc...

 

So, yes, some will be outsourcing but many are simply disappearing.

my CV has been on monster for over a year and yes you will get plenty of job offers, but most of them will be temp contracts and usually miles away from your location...i've not had a decent job offer yet.

Private sector is possibly a different kettle of fish.

A lot of the public sector IT was supporting software or departments, many of which were tied to or reliant on quango's. Where quango's weren't involved, councils are cutting workforces in an attempt to cut costs. Less users means you need less support staff to support them.

i am very tempted to sign up for both (advertise my self and as an employer) that way i can look at others CV and get ideas how to improve.
