Air Con - what temp ?

After 5 long years I finally have some air con in our dedicated server room. It's a small room.

 

So I am wondering what the best temp would be to set it to - what do you have yours set to ?

I was used to air con in vast data centers before so have no idea what to set it to for this small setup.......

18 to 22 degrees celcius at a minimum of 20-30% humidity, if its a really small really well sealed room and the humidity drops too low the static buildup becomes dangerous.

 

Personally I'd go for around 19C.

It was set to 16 [ lowest it would go ] - blooming chilly in there !! Have now set it to 18. WIll RTFM later to work out how to turn it off when it gets to the relevant temp.....

It took me 5 years !! And now all the kit is out of our office and in a dedicated room - my working environment has improved about 1000%

25 to 27 degrees is cool enough for servers to run and saves you al lot of energy on the airco!

It is if your happy with lower projected lifespans on your hardware, places like google can get away with it as they specificly request hardware able to run at higher temperatures without an issue. Not all hardware is made equal though and increased heat in things like hard drives and UPS batteries will in most cases shorten their lifespan.

True, but 27 degrees is well within the operational environment spec (at least of our Dell-servers). We purchase all our servers with a 5 year warranty and after those 5 years they are replaced.

If Dell thinks that their servers won't run for 5 years in a 27 deg. serverroom, the operational environment spec would say the temperature had to be lower than 27 deg.

 

In the 8+ years with our serverroom at this temp, we hardly had any hardware failures (maybe 3 failed HDD's in all those years!), so in my opinion, 27 deg is cool enough and saves a lot of energy!

I tend to have it about 19-21 in the winter and 18-19 in the summer. It should probably be the same all year round I guess, but it feels a lot hotter in the summer

Server check site recommends a maximum of 23 degrees in the rack itself.
