Tomorrow I become a specky!

Well, I got 40.5 years out of them, but following an eye test on Tuesday I have to bow to the inevitable. I'm farsighted. So at lunch tomorrow I go to pick up my 2 pairs of Jasper Conrans 'Non-gittish' range glasses from the opticians, and yes, I'll post a piccy for you all to have a giggle at once I get back into the office. I've often thought of contacts BUT as I often fall asleep whilst working its probably not advised and I don't fancy messing with fluids etc, plus I like my Quicksilver frames they are great Also have a pair of those super flexie ones you can screw up and they just spring back normal but there just too light feeling for me to enjoy wearing.

 

Wear them with pride Chris its nothing to be worried about

Being of an age where I occasionally take a short nap, I have no problems with my soft lenses, I've been wearing them since you had to 'boil' them overnight.

God no!! I can't stand anythign touching my eyeballs. I can'teven open my eyes when swimming underwater!

Eugh ive been wearing glasses since i was 10! I wear contact lenses mostly now. Daily lenses ftw!

 

I made myself giggle a few weeks ago. I woke up and popped my glasses on but got freaked out as my vision was blurry, but when i took them off my eyesight was fine. I thought it was either a miracle or i'd been bitten by a spider...... but then i realised id slept in my lenses :/

I was prescribed glasses for computer use about 5 years ago. Had another eye test about 2 years ago and I was then told I no longer needed glasses.

 

Once a specky, not always a specky (in rare cases lol)

My brother claims that as well. He was always smashing glasses so probably has saved money in doing the laser eye thing.

I've worn glasses since I was about 13, I actually quite like wearing them as I have a slightly (ok a majorly) receeding hair line, and the glasses break up my face a bit. Pain the the backside sometimes thou, I managed to lose a pair in a crowd at a festival once - got knocked straight off my face. Not only did that make it very difficult to find my way round (as I'm seriuously blind without them) but I had to find a way of getting a new pair before the festival ended as I had to drive home - that was not much fun!

 

There's a moral to that story - if you need them for driving, keep a spare pair in your glovebox!

I've finally got round to booking a new eye test after getting shafted by Tesco with my last lot, currently wearing some with a 3 year old prescription which isn't good.

I've worn glasses since I was 13 - My astigmatism prevented me wearing contact lenses when I was younger. Though lenses are available now, I really don't fancy sticking things in my eyes.

 

I am very short-sighted, however with age my distance prescription now over-corrects my eyesight for reading... so this year I had to go for of vari-focals - brilliant, but expensive!

Had laser eye surgery eight years ago, but now need reading glasses - boo! Out with a couple of old school friends last night and none of us read our watches, a very sad state of affairs. Of course it may have been the martini not our age!

I have needed glasses since the age of 19 and have worn contacts for 24 years. I have astigmatism too, but can wear lenses. I am naturally short sighted and my lenses now over-correct my short sight so that I could not read which was really frustrating and led to me moving a lens out of the way when reading small print (people around are often upset when I do this - dunno why!). But now I have varifocal lenses, which work well.

As for laser surgery, I was told that if you are long sighted you will end up with perfect sight, at least until you get to a certain age, but if you are short sighted your long sight will be perfect but you will immediately need reading glasses. Couldnt really see the point.

When wearing my lenses, I do need reading glasses for very very small print, so I bought some stylish metal framed ones from the local chemist for £4.99

Contacts I would certainly not go with, I tend to fall asleep too often. I would not go for eye surgery either - I would not want to risk it. Both my kids wear glasses and both have had ops to correct squints - [ interestingly enough only this morning I took my youngest for an eye checkup at the hospital and he has now been signed off so it's a normal opticians for him now ] - glasses cost my family a small fortune as I certainly don't compromise on style. I don't use the 'fast outlets' too - I opt for a local opticians who welcome us when ever I go in which is quite often to get the boys glasses repaired and 9 times out of 10 they won't even charge me. The customer service is pure quality.

Also as I pay into the HSA every month I get half the cost back on all the pairs of glasses I purchase.

I should wear mine more often but after a days work I tend to take them off.

Having been very shortsighted I love not having to wear glasses all the time, playing sport without glasses is a massive plus. Never fancied lenses can't bear to have anything to do with my eyes!

I've been wearing glasses since high school and I've figured that there's only two routes which you can go down. A) Buy a black pair of frames and pretend that you're not half blind or B) Buy an outrageously cool pair and just say "screw it - my vision isn't going to get any better, might as well accept it".

 

A few years ago I decided to go for option B and bought an awesomely bright coloured designer pair, you'll always get people commenting on them and it'll set you apart from all the people with boring specs, go for it!

As for falling asleep with contacts (I'm looking at you, Mattx), worry no more! Get some lenses made from Lotrafilcon, and these are perfectly fine to sleep in. Lotrafilcon A lenses are OK for up to 6 days continuous wear (I use these, handy for camping), and Lotrafilcon B are up to 30 days continuous wear.

 

As for solutions, forget the all in one no rub solutions, they dont't work very well. I've tried them all. The best solutions are peroxide with a surfactant, AOSept or Boots Deep Clean are the best. Just stick your lenses in the basket, and the bubbling catalyst/surfactant cleans the lenses. No rubbing, no fuss. Simples, as they say.

 

Oh, and laser surgery scares the bejaysus out of me.

 

Hear Hear. Can't beat contacts, if you can wear them. I was terrified at the thought of touching my eyes and used to have to back myself into a corner to put them in but the incentive for me was that I didnt want to wear glasses at my wedding, and without them I wouldnt have been able to see anyone! The new softer lenses are a dream to put in, and you do get used to doing it very quickly.

So far, none of my children need glasses (mrwITch has perfect sight, bless), but if they did, if possible I would get them contacts asap.(depends on the eye problem of course)
