Junior Librarian and Windows 7

Hi guys.

 

I'm currently in the process of of upgrading all of the school's desktop clients XP to Win7 but alas haven ran into some difficulty with that 'wonderful' (tongue in cheek) piece of software, Junior Librarian (v.3.2.2.27). Neither Full install or Client Install works, not even in Compatibility Mode (XP SP2, XP SP3). I was hoping that Win7's XP Mode would be able to save the day, but alas no. Getting the fingerprint scanner and the barcode scanner to traverse the bridge between the VPC and the host proved to be a fruitless venture.

 

I was just wondering if anyone's had any success with this?

 

I get the following error messages:

 

 

Junior3

 

Error 1904.Module C:\Windows\system32\msxml.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel.

 

 

...then if you carry once it's 'installed' it says:

 

[only when being run for the first time]

 

 

Junior Libararian Error

 

MODULE : CLASS: clsSystem.Calculate_TimesReviewed

ERROR : Too few parameters.Expected 1.

NUMBER : 3061

SOURCE : DAO.Database

 

 

...then another error:

...then after all that and you're finally in to the program when trying to import marc records:

ERROR : The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot find the input table or 'MARC Tags'. Make sure that it exists and that the name is spelled correctly.

NUMBER : 3078

SOURCE : DAO.Database

 

 

Any help/insight/sympathy would be a great help.

Hi,

 

We have just installed Junior Librarian system on a 2008 r2 server and Windows 7 clients without any problem. We used the latest version and 'edited' the RM CC3 MSI.

 

Server

You need to install the Server MSI on the server and move the Junior3 folder to a shared location that your clients have access to. You also need to map a drive to this folders. For example; if you have a shared folder called 'delivery' mapped to x: on the clients and you copied the junior3 folder into the delivery(x:) folder and the x: drive is accessible by all the users that will be using the system then this should be all you need to do to the server. (They need write access to this folder - you can check the exact permission on the CC3 installation instructions)

 

Client

You then need to edit the client MSI. You can do this with Microsoft Orca tool. Once you can open the MSI using Orca you need to search for p:\junior3 (this is from memory so I would need to check) and replace the text with the path you copied the junior3 folder to. In the example below that would be x:\junior3. Once you have edited the MSI you can then deploy the MSI in your normal way (e.g. group policy) and provide your uses with shortcuts.

Oh dear this does not bode well for me then as I was intending to install Win7 and Junior Librarian. This is on just one computer, there are no other clients, so a server install is not necessary. However, the current Librarian user is a network account and the machine does back up to the server. Any advice would be welcome.

Why not still do the server setup, that way there is easy expandability or if the person changes job there is no real need to change the setup just the user accounts that have the share. And you can have the folder backup separately or such for people that like to do that compared to just backing up the whole server at once.

Hi guys! Thank you for the help!

 

Edd. I went with your suggestion. Ran the Application on the server. Edited the MSI in the Package in Orca and applied a transform to change the path then deployed it. I still had to wrestle with it to get it to play ball though but it all came out good in the wash. I got an annoyingly generic error message with deft hint of uselessness popping up every time when trying to run it on the client though. After an hour of cursing I figured out what it wanted (with the help of Procmon of course).

 

It's being tested by the Librarian hopefully all will be OK from now on.

Is there anywhere I can download Junior Librarian 3 version 3.2.2.27?

 

We have JL3 currently on Windows XP (standalone) PC and I am planning to move it to Windows 7 PC, but just realised I do not have to installation CD. I have checked the C Drive of the XP PC and there are a few exe files (setup, junior3, enquiry, circulate etc) I tried some of them but no luck. I know there is a new version called library.net but is there anywhere I can get the version I'm using???

I got the latest download file from the net. You just need the school number and postcode. If I remember rightly a quick phone call to microlib got me the school number. I got it working with the latest version on Server 2008 R2 and Win 7 clients.

The alternative of course is Junior Librarian.net which uses Silverlight. This works fine with IE10 on Windows 7.

If my dodgy memory serves me right, the school number is available to see on the running client, I believe at the bottom on the grey "status bar".

"Non .NET" runs fine on 7. (Never tried the .NET version).

 

I've even had it running on 8, but there were a few issues so I wouldn't recommend it. OTH, it was an older version as that school had stopped paying for upgrades.

i dont know any school thatb has the net version that wishes they haddnt stuck with the local one its just less hassle and much faster/easier

Pass, I've no idea on costs. I thought the online version always was .NET? In the early days it was problematic, but it runs pretty well these days. Just remember to bung Silverlight to your master images as well as Flash.

I spoke to them a few months ago about the new version (actually wanted a new disk for v3 but they said they couldn't supply one) and was quoted £1,700 pa for a license. So no then.
