gibbo_ap Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 i get so angry when staff come and say 'my pen drive has been lost/stolen/damaged.... can i have one?' they are £5 from play, go and get one!!! i paid for my own.... you earn more, if the school supplied the staff with their own it would cost a lot .... go, run, play.com, do it nowww /rant
LeMarchand Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I have had staff demand a larger HDD in their laptop as they've filled it up with personal pictures/music/video.
maark Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Surely school should supply them if they are needed for the job?
Dom_ Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Not really needed for their job though - this is the reason they're given laptops!
powdarrmonkey Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Surely school should supply them if they are needed for the job? Your office keys are needed for your job, but if you left them in a pub you wouldn't expect the school to roll over and replace them just like that... 1
gl3nnym Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I have had staff demand a larger HDD in their laptop as they've filled it up with personal pictures/music/video. Don't even get me started on iTunes!!! We have this continuously where their whole music collections end up on our network. TIS ILLEGAL PEOPLE, KEEP IT AT HOME PLZKTHX!
Hightower Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 The way I see it is, if they need them then that is what their departmental budget is for. 4
tmcd35 Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 i get so angry when staff come and say 'my pen drive has been lost/stolen/damaged.... can i have one?' Did you keeps a back up of any of the data on the network? No? Oh, dear - now you know why school policy is NOT to use pen drives for data storage. Doesn't matter how meny times they loose thier schemes of work *some* teachers will never learn!
bossman Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 @all: Hopefully within the next 2 years i hope to do away with USB pendrives and the like as they will be able to get their desktop from home, in doing so it will also eradicate the need for the laptops which they feel are a part of the job description (no! No! NO! laptop scheme for teachers ended 4 years ago now BUY YOUR OWN!!!). I could ask for all kinds of equipment to fulfil my role but it is not necessary for me to have it. What a job where all you have to do is ask and when you get refused stamp your feet and scweem and scweem and make yourself sick hehe!! I can you know Enjoy your 6 weeks holiday and keep out of my way for the duration of that time and whatever you do......................................................DON'T WISH ME HAPPY HOLIDAYS unless you already know that I don't get them and your taking the p**s!!! 2

I know of at least one member of staff (now "moved up" in the LEA) who would see that as a reason for the school to provide both a home computer and network connection (and probably a printer too).
rad Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Err have you got a PSU for my school laptop, its broken. Can you get one yesterday? Err who earns more than me, who has broken it, err you have. I have a similar (hint) model to your laptop, mine works fine, not broken, mangled bent, etc and it works fine. As for USB, err what is the storage area on your computer for then? Use the VLE, its much safer for crist sake.
gibbo_ap Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 Surely school should supply them if they are needed for the job? part of my jd is to keep a breast of current news and dev, so i build a new computer costing over 1k, i didnt ask for that back, i would have been told to f-off. the old head of it get brought a pc every 4-5 years i needed a pen drive for work/home so i paid for one, i needed lots of pen drives for builds - i got school to pay. rant/ sorry im really hot today and brain fubar
bossman Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 @LeMarchand: It would be entirely up to the individual but as the use of USB storage devices would be banned in the school by the SLT as it creates the easy transfer of data off the network. So if they don't want to use the VDI solution from home then they will have to do all their work at school hehe!! Sorted! With the advent of the VDI solution we can sort so that data cannot be taken off the network without permission and an audit trail setup for those that have permission. All part of the "Safeguarding Model" which the school wishes to enforce rigidly.
korifugi Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Don't even get me started on iTunes!!! I have a policy regarding iTunes: The school does not hold the licenses for the music so, I see it... I delete it. Draconian measures away!!!! :-)
localzuk Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 USB sticks are a right pain. If people aren't losing them, they're sticking them in the wrong sockets, bringing the wrong one, breaking them, storing work only on one of them, having them full of viruses etc... There's no need for them, we provide a sharepoint system, we provide email, we provide a VLE, we provide laptops, we provide centralised, backed up storage. Why should we have to fund dozens of mini-disasters in the making?
dhicks Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I know of at least one member of staff (now "moved up" in the LEA) who would see that as a reason for the school to provide both a home computer and network connection (and probably a printer too). I think that's a fair idea (minus the printer) - as part of the job description, every teacher should be expected to have a computer and broadband access at home. I would sort that by giving each teacher a £300 one-off payment to go and buy whatever equipment they wanted - that would buy you a perfectly serviceable netbook, or nettop to go on your home TV, or a decent second-hand PC and monitor, or you could put it towards a Macbook, or whatever you wanted. Then I'd increase teacher's pay by £20 a month, on the condition that they used that to buy a broadband connection. Then there'd be no reason for any staff to bring in a laptop or any removeable media again - just remote in from your home PC to the school's servers. The PC would stay the property, and most definataly the responsibility, of the teacher - it stays at home, they can stuff it full of whatever viruses and downloads they like. -- David Hicks

As you'd also have to provide the servers for them to remotely connect to... For a school with 40 staff doing this, that'd be £40.8k over 3 years. Which is £1020 per teacher over 3 years. We spend roughly £600 per laptop for our staff, with a life expectancy of 3 years. Add in licensing, and you end up with about £660. I doubt many schools could justify the extra cost.
Ric_ Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I'm with bossman... Teachers are free to stay in school and do all their work (and some do - refusing to do work at home). If a teacher does not want to use their home PC or broadband connection, they don't have to. The remote access is simply there to make life easier for them. Similarly, if we provide a laptop or other device, we expect it to be used for work. We tend to turn a blind eye to people using laptops for personal Internet use and whathaveyou but if the teacher wants to use the machine for storing their personal music collection, that's taking the mick.

Ric_ Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 im not even too worried about that as long as they dont want me to transfer y-tunes you installed it you support it Your making the assumption that they have Jesus-tunes installed... work laptop so work build. If you cannot justify a piece of software for work use, you don't have it installed.

Here, here! Although tbh I don't care if they do store personal music/photos/etc on the school provided laptops (guilty as charged ) so long as they know that if I have to work on their laptop - install new hdd, os, image - then I'm not backing personal data up first.
dhicks Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 That works out more than buying them laptops IMO. Oh yes, of course, but I think it would be the most efficient way of spending money to get all teaching staff using IT to its full potential and being able to work how they wished. It'd be the easiest way to run a centrally-funded IT-for-teachers kind of scheme - no administration of PCs, no liability for schools for anything staff do, simply give them cash and leave them to get on with it. As part of your contract as a teacher you would agree to have a home broadband connection (and £20 a month would sort out pretty much everyone, even those connecting via a mobile broadband dongle) and a working home PC. -- David Hicks
daveyboy Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Given the chance - you lot would spoil all our fun. Our teachers use usb sticks (department pays) They get a warning about not backing up, viruses, etc, etc and we have a sweep between us. Pound a week, each teacher is 'given' to one of us and when one of your group appear at the door with/without said USB stick broken / lost / viruses, etc Its your job to include 3 phrases from a list in the sentence thereafter. If you manage - you take the pot. (mine last time out at £21). We got fed up of telling people along, long time ago.................... 1
garethEds Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Surely school should supply them if they are needed for the job? For the past three years we have supplied staff with USB sticks. This is the first year we cannot due to budget cuts. What is amusing is staff coming up to you all best buddies because they want another for their son/daughter/mother/father etc. Gutted Gareth
