What Educational Software fails on Win7

at the moment, I can't get any 11inch XP netbooks - I've either got to go back to 10inch ones or get 11/12inch ones that only come with Win7.

 

What software is not going to work on Win7?

 

or put it another way - can anyone whoes using Win7 in primaries post of list of software that works OK - e.g Tizzys Toybox, Textease Studio CT etc.

 

I am assumming than Open Office, Office 2003 and IE8 work OK

Might not be too relevant for your needs Si, but for peoples replies it might be worth categorising which apps have problems running in a 64 bit architecture too since 64 bit is much more prevelant under W7.

textease ct (6050 i think newest version branded by lightbox) works happily on x64 win7 depends on which version of tizzy if its the old playbook version id guess not the newer flash one shouldnt be an issue, I believe office 2003 isnt that happy on win7 but ive not tried it

No joy, but didn't try too hard. Tux Paint seemed to install fine (as an alternative to Dazzle), but does require the teachers to want to try to use it.

 

Amazingly Digiblue 2.0 and QX3 Microscope loaded; haven't checked that they actually work yet...

 

Currently building a "kids netbook" image, so I'll probably find more.

Si on a complete side note if you buy a ultimate lic with them you get downgrade rights to go back to xp. I know its an expensive option though.

digiblue 3.1 installs fine just fails to load id assume the same with qx3 and db2 as its pretty much teh sane software

Add SuperLogo to the list of failed installs.

 

The DigiBlue Movie Creator (2.0) actually starts; it's the camera drivers that seem to be the problem. Bit of a blow, because I've actually seen these in use, unlike a lot of the school's hardware/software. The head is looking at more video cameras (as filming everything is the current vogue) but - as ever - it's weaning the staff off what they're used to using.

All the really old stuff which I really wanted to get rid of works perfectly, unfortunately. We are on W7 32-bit, simply because of lack of support for SIMS on 64-bit and quite a bit of our other software wouldn't work and couldn't afford to replace it all.

I was wondering if it involved going into XP mode first, then launching the program or if launching the program can automatically invoke XP mode. If the former, most of the staff i work with are never going to remember to do it.

It automatically starts XP mode. To be honest though we found it a bit of a cludge and not very practical to use. If you have a Schools Agreement, App-V which comes as part of the Desktop Optimisation Pack is a much better product.

Tried XP Mode, which was successful for most of the software I listed.

 

Digiblue won't work as it thinks the display is <16-bit, and the Microscope software just freezes the whole system.

(and probably some of the older Nelson Thornes installers..)

 

The workaround I found..

 

1. Install the flash patch from the Nelson Thornes Support Site - then install the application

2. First Run - the applications as an administrator - this allows the creation of directories - also login as a teacher while running the application as administrator

3. Specify the Program Files\Nelson Thornes folder in AppLocker

 

I've got a further problem that these programs use Internet Explorer to display the content - so I get the Information Bar (To Protect your Security because ActiveX is evil - click here to accept the risk - or similar!) - I managed to get that switched off briefly but it's back again now..!

 

I can't be the only person to experience problems with Nelson Thornes software..?

 

Stangely SIMS seems to run on 64bit (W7 and Server 2008R2) - despite being unsupported..

 

I've a cmd that runs

 

SIMSAMPARKSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerApps} [sIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS.net"

SIMSApplicationSetup.exe /S {QuietMode} {NoServerApps} [sIMSDotNetDirectory]="%PROGRAMFILES%\SIMS\SIMS.net"

 

Then copies a good SIMS.ini to the windows folder

Then another cmd to do the SIMSPerm stuff..

With ref to @Witch I've successfully installed Dazzle on a 32bit Win7 laptop, V1.44 dated 1999. However, just come to install Collins New Primary Maths and it won't - message cannot install on OS.

Has anyone had any problems with Activeteach/Activebook? It seems to fail with 'Library not registered' whether it's locally installed or run from the network (which worked fine on XP)

It's something I thought I had tested but obviously havent and now Maths staff are quite desperate to use it...whoops

Ah, scrap that, it works when the 'white screen' patch is applied...phew!

 

If anyone needs it (took me a while to find their support area) - Hangs on white screen upon launch?

Is anyone using XP mode with any success? I'm sourcing laptops for pupil use and really want to put xp on them for simplicity of use and can't get xp downgrade disks with the model I want. I've got xp disks I can use with the downgrade rights but don't want the hassle of sata drivers etc.

 

I've posted on the HP forums and got a right snooty reply back from someone advising me to use xp mode with a sarcastic reference to fact I'm buying a quantity of laptops! I tried xp mode with the staff windows 7 laptops and wasn't really impressed at all!

its ok if hardware supports virtualization if it dont its slow and annoying in my experience
