Gracious, it sounds like I'd better start thinking of something suitibly technical to ask :-) Hopefully, any technical questions will be asked more to gauge your thought process than seeing if you come up with exactly the correct answer, although I won't be involved in the interview itself so I don't know exactly what is going to be asked. -- David Hicks
HarryMonkey Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Trouble with technical tests is that, with few exceptions, none of them have really tested "network manager" skils, all have been geared towards knowing what DNS stands for and that sort of thing.
dwhyte85 Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Yes, exactly... basically questions from a prep microsoft exam. I found they were scared to ask me questions... i guess they (SLT) don't have the knowledge and are afraid to convey themself as a bit silly, or they're dead scared of IT.

It's always an eye-opener to see what other schools have and how they make use of it and I have certainly taken onboard a few new ideas which I hope will help where I am now and where I move onto next. I look forward to working at Alton Convent, it looks like an exciting move as I will be in charge of the IT rather than having to ask my manager before making changes, etc. The increase in salary also means I should now be able to rent somewhere which will be exciting. The school has a very nice premises, envionment and staff and it should be a great job. I guess my current position will be up for grabs soon then.

Funnily enough that's what I spent most of last week doing helping the Caretaker strip out and refurnish the Deputy Head's office When do you start Alex? I hope they supply you with lunches like that one we had Wednesday

Once I get the employment contract and my manager from my current job returns from his holdiay (next week). Then it will be about 3-4 weeks from then.

You don't normally get fed lunch, I'm afraid, although if there's an event on then lunch is generally served in the lobby. Handily, your office is right next door, complete with a window on to the lobby - all you need to do is bring a sturdy fishing rod and a decent-sized hook... -- David Hicks

I can't move the second, mirroring gateway server over to Smoothwall until I can get to it and put some more disks in it, which I can't do until I can stop the web server running on the same machine. Unfortunatly, this might not happen in the next two weeks or so, so getting Smoothwall mirrored between two gateways is probably going to be Alex's first task :-) -- David Hicks

Marci Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 (edited) which I can't do until I can stop the web server running on the same machine Knock up a Linux machine in Virtualbox on a spare windows server... rsync the live server to the virtual one... when done and configured, give the virtualbox the same IP as the real, then take down the physical server. Once done, bring back online, rsync back again & mysqldump from virtual & import to physical (if necessary), flip IPs back... and then realise you can keep the virtual machine, leave rsync etc running every 10 mins by cron, set up MySQL replication, and have a perfect standby web mirror ready to roll should you ever need to perform such ops again!
