Well sorry to fire up this thread again,

But we now use the phonetic alphabet.

So MIKE for MDT

PAPA for Printers

DELTA for DPM

VICTOR for Virtual Box

SIERRA for Sharepoint

etc, etc

We were going to rename our DC's to ROMEO and JULIET but were told that might cause havoc :(

Were pretty pleased with it.

Not that I use them but Red Dwarf names would be good.

I do - so far I have:

#Lister

#Kryten

and

#Holly

As I move my other sites forward I'll be filling out the entire cast - one site has already asked me if they can have #Rimmer

i'm still pushing for skynet as a DC name. just to be able to net send * so it comes up as

Message from SKYNET : Humanity is scheduled to shutdown in 10 mins. Please save any belongings and do not fight.

AdminSrv with the domain name of Admin for the staff side

Springfield with the domain name of quimby for the student side (They picked it from South Park, Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad) and Simpsons came top with over 80% of the student vote

No issues so far!

Obvious addition to OP list, Firefly ;)

We have boring names here, dc1 etc. but that does make it much easier to work with. My last school had generic names (sitecode-001, sitecode-002 etc.) which made it a nightmare to remember what ran on which server, so as boring as they are, function-as-name is brilliant.

For inspiration for other lists though, the moons of the solar system would be a lengthy list, or if you prefer your magic to your science, start going through the list of Elven names in the Silmarillion (or hobbits in LOTR or whatever).

Games consoles might be good to panic some people as well, "Can I have this software please?" "Oh yes, just let me load the MegaDrive up..."

We name all of ours after Harry Potter here....

for instance our 4 DC's are potter, hermione, ron, dumbledore.

Our Email servers: malfoy, chang with the CAS servers being crabbe/goyle.

Just a small few examples from us!

Well our servers are just plain 'initials of school" with server tagged on the end, however as we are a primary all the pc's are names after different things, each class with a different topic, i.e. planets, simpsons (that one was my choice!), thomas the tank engine and friends, harry potter etc etc. At other schools we are really inventive its PC01, PC02 etc!

use to work for a ISP in bedford.

and i called the servers,

Clueless (DNS, Mail)

Useless (DNS, hosting)

Blackhole (Gateway server)

WastOfSpace (Backup server)

NotSoSecret (radius server)

and the Cisco Access Switch that customers use to dial in on (dialup 56k flex) was called "Idiots"

just imagine the conversations we could have lol..

i'm sure there's a rather rude joke in there, but i'll keep it to myself :p

my old place had star trek ship names, and of course the primary had to be Enterprise! They started moving away from that eventually and moved into firefly and galactica too after a while.

My current place I haven't renamed the servers yet. Main DC is has a boring name, admin server is adminsvr. I have however, recommissioned an old server to host my AV and a few other bits, and that is now Rivendell.

I'm thinking the admin server when I rename it will become either Rohan or Isengard. The main DC i shall not be able to rebuild until I get the goahead to rebuild the whole network from scratch with server 2008 R2, which hopefully will be next summer. If so, I shall probably name it Gondor.

Future servers will of course be Hobbiton, Bree, Mirkwood, Moria, Edoras, Lothlorien, Bywater, Tookborough, Dale, and if i run out, Fornost, Mordor, Angmar and Osgiliath!

My manager couldn't understand the fun names. We had servers named under planets (saturn, mars, jupiter) before we did a server refresh 4 years ago. I'm now limited to doing sensible names in relation to what the server does.

Oh well. At least I can gain amusement from your suggestions :D.

Tell him/her it’s a potential security vulnerability to have servers named after what they do!

Still like my Spiceworks server name - Dune :)

simple solution, SRV-EXCHANGE runs anti virus, SRV-DC runs exchange and SRV-AV is a domain controller :p
