Duane_Dibbley Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Hi all, New website up and running: Heald Place Primary School A bit sparse at the mo, but will be adding content all the time (if the teachers ever decide to give me any). It's a Joomla 1.5 site, using a template generated in Artisteer (bit of a cop out I know, but being as I didn't get paid anything extra and it's my first website thought I'd keep things simple). Please let me know what you think, and let me know how it runs in IE from your end. Seems to be slow in IE8, especially when loading from my win7 machine at home, but superquick in firefox. - probably to do with the Artisteer template. Anyhoo, would really appreciate your thoughts. p.s I know the logo leaves something to be desired, it was only supposed to be a rough mock up but the head went ahead and ordered stationary etc with it printed on so think i'll have to leave it...*sigh*
bossman Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 @jonwoods123: Bright blue gives my eyes a challenge. Ditto here I would be in favour of toning down and softening the colours apart from that it has a pretty good layout. Well done 1

Well done Yeh was thinkin along similar lines, also seems to show up purple on some of our projectors lol. Thanks for the feedback 1
danrhodes Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Yeah as above tone the blue down a little, looks a bit too high contrast combined with the yellow text. seems to show up purple on some of our projectors lol. Sounds like you may have some dodgy VGA cables or projectors :-P 1

Sounds like you may have some dodgy VGA cables or projectors :-P Aye, none of our projectors have been taken care of properly. I dont think any of the filters have ever been cleaned. I've only been working here a few months, and most of the projectors are locked in cages which the key for seems to have gone missing...hey ho

Where are you from it doesnt say in your profile? D
round2it Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 hp in the logo needs centering my 2 p worth tone down the blue a little but looks good though 1
Duane_Dibbley Posted May 19, 2010 Author Posted May 19, 2010 @danrhodes - I'm from Manchester, why do you ask? hp in the logo needs centering my 2 p worth tone down the blue a little but looks good though Yeh as I said it was only supposed to be a mock up. The letters are actually exactly aligned to the centre line of the shield, its because it isn't a monospace font (the H and P are different widths) that it looks off line. I have done another version with a monospace font (recommended by sysman) that I will swap into the template when i've messed with the colours a bit. Again, thanks for the feedback
MkII Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Good job Jon! Nice & simple yet lots of info nicely presented. Excellent job 1

FN-GM Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I think you should change the picture of our head. He looks like he is in an identity parade / mug shot style. Maybe something more casual, or seeing him more relaxed? 1
maestromasada Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 overall is good, but reduce the logo so that it gives you a narrowed upper frame. Blue and yellow don't match well, it seems a traffic signal from the distance. Try to reduce the brightness of the blue and see how it looks. What do you think about mine: St. James' Catholic High School - A Specialist Science and Sports College 1
Duane_Dibbley Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 change the picture of our head. Scared me for a second then...thought there was an undercover tech at our school!! Will be replacing the pic with a better one when I get it. I'm realising that this is going to be the annoying thing about looking after the website - unless I take full responsibity for the content as well (creating/sourcing it as well as uploading it) then the website is never going to be as good as it could be...
featured_spectre Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 I hope you realise that every link on your site opens in a new tab / page.... 1
buzzard Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 I hope you realise that every link on your site opens in a new tab / page.... It's Ok for me here with FF and IE8, opens in the current tab. 1
featured_spectre Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Chrome and IE8 every link opens in new tab (just this site) everything is fine.
Duane_Dibbley Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 Chrome and IE8 every link opens in new tab (just this site) everything is fine. When you say every link, do you mean internal or external ones? I have set the external ones to open a new tab/window, but all menu item links etc should stay in the same window (it does whenever I try it).
featured_spectre Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 internal links open in a new tab. external links open in a new page.
Duane_Dibbley Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 internal links open in a new tab. external links open in a new page. hmmmm curiouser and curiouser. Cant seem to replicate the problem from here. U think it might be some settings in your browsers?
featured_spectre Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 it doesnt do it on any other website but yours. I tried to rule out settings by going on firefox and it does it there too. There could be something in my ISA server but why it picked your site I will never know. 1
Devontechie Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 internal links open in a new tab. external links open in a new page. I don't get this problem. I've tried site in Firefox 3.6, Opera 10, IE8 and Chrome. Steve 1
featured_spectre Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 It has to be my PC. Works fine on my laptop....despite the fact that the laptop is an identical set up. 1
