Best Broadband Router

A friend of mine wants to upgrade his router at home

 

He needs to be able to connect 6 devices via wireless to it - sometimes at the same time. The one he has keeps dropping the wifi connection to the xbox etc.

 

Don't think any of his devices are N standard

 

What do you recommend as a good reliable router than can cope with all these devices?

Use 2 routers (1 in WAP mode) and shared the load based on location? Otherwise the Linksys blue linux based ones seem fairly good at throughput and range for the £40 mark. Depends on budget really.

I have a virgin cable connection and use a xycel router with built in powerline. This happily supports all my Laptops (5) and my Wii wirelessly 2 printers (wireless and my NAS (hard wired). I can also connect other devices using 200av powerline blocks which allow me to open the wired network up around the house.

the netgear dg834 & variants.

 

i had the dg834g and it was a brilliant router until it blew up thanks to a thunderstorm. the dlink i have now is rubbish compared to it.

I have used the linksys WRT54GL - fantastic little box and still works like a charm after 2 years... only reason I dont use it now... Moved from DSL to ADSL

 

Can thoroughly recommend that router though

On my ADSL connection I used a DGN2000, best router I've had, can have 6 or 7 devices on it at once plus about 5 wired.

another vote for WRT54GL. Currently have two of them one has been in near continous use for 5 years minus powercuts and house moves and never had a problem

If he were to buy an N standard one. I'm assuming it will work with G devices but just run at G speeds?

I've been using a D-Link (forget the model number, sorry) Wireless N cable router for about 2 years now, I've never had any problems with it and it is in constant use by both of my parents laptops, PS3, 2x Xbox 360's, the Wii, PSP and pretty much all other wireless devices, there are about 4 phones which are permanently connected to it too.

Another vote for the Netgear range Great kit and well worth the money.

Netgear DG834G is an awesome (and cheap) router. DG834N if in a ADSL2+ area and/or wanting future proofing for wireless standards.

 

In fact, just buy the DG834N.

Buy a bunch of linksys powerline devices. Best thing I ever did!

The OP wanted a wireless router supporting 6 devices. Several of the posts here supported Netgear (me too!) but I also have access to a Draytek 2820N.

 

In general, what would be the maximum number of wireless devices that could be used simultaneously with a SOHO wireless router? I suspect that the answer will be "it depends..."!

+1 for the netgear - i've had one for 4-5 possible longer years. had no problems what so ever.

I'd also recommend Netgear. I have a cheapy DG384G that I bought off eBay for £13 to check whether my PS3s problem was the router or the PS3. Turns out the PS3 didn't like the wireless of my Belkin Wireless N+ router.

I really need to upgrade my router and i want to make sure it will work with the 2 xbox 360's (and the rest) as i currently have the problem of 1 of em going strict (FYI i have a virgin line). I've read that a better router would resolve the issue.

 

Its funny how i've played games online with multiple PC's with no problem but getting 2 xbox to work on the network..
