If its a 100 meg switch, technically, you can use either, as they will auto-neg.

If its a gigabit, you'll need a standard straight cable.

Cheers, a squirrel has eaten through the network cable on the roof and i need to put a new end on it

 

I'd go nuts if any squirrel ate away at our cables.

a what type of switch is it

b if it has a up link and down use them

c some old switches you can turn the links off

d if it a cheap switch just plug them in

c if it has dhcp dont connect to your lan

Auto negotiation has nothing to do with x-over or straight through cables Chunky (AFAIK). Auto negotiation is the process where the switch can determine things like speed and duplex of the link instead of having to set these properties manually.

new update on this. allegedly the media technician needed some cable and asked the site manager for some ladders and chopped the cable up because he thought it was unused :evil_twisted:

both media technician and imanginary squirrel are okay as the tech isn't in today and the squirrel doesn't exist. I had a hard time believing squirrel story when i went up onto the roof and it was a clean cut and 30ft of cable was missing. I know squirrels are athletic but pulling 30ft of cable through a hole in the wall that was coiled and plugged into a switch on the other side of the wall is a bit much to believe.

oh and the switch it was going into had a little button to go from straight to X-over so no worries there. thanks for advice everyone :)

I'll think you'll find that speed and duplex depend very much on whether it's a straight or crossover.

During the auto-negotiation process connections are made between the 2 devices at the highest speed possible by the hardware. If the hardware (inc the cable) aren't capable then the connection will fail.

 

The OP asked whether it had to be straight or crossover, and if it mattered.

If it was a gigabit connection he wanted, then yes, it matters a lot, as Gigabit (on the whole) is not spec'ed to allow a standard crossover cable - though I've seen a cable pin diagram that does work.

 

Using a standard crossover cable would cause autonegotiation to drop down to 100meg (full or half).
