yeh, i have already blocked usb sticks on the kids accounts. garrh wish i could block floppy drives to....but i know the staff would kick up a right fuss

Have any of your schools tried actually listening to the kids? Our best security updates came from asking the cleverer kids how it was they bypassed the existing security anyway... If you're nice to the kids (I know a lot who don't seem to be able to manage it) the more they can help you... They might be sods, but they're not dog mess on your sneakers.

There has to be a balance, I seem to have done quite well befriending faculty and students alike, manners go a long way (which I have noticed in interview many other IT staff lack totally).

Just the other day I was chatting to a student who was telling me all about a site we didn't filter, next day it was blacklisted. He was most disappointed, and stated that he just wouldn't tell me again. This approach can be effective, A friend of mines daughter is at another local school - in an unofficial capacity I'm able to help her to keep their schools techs on their toes, in return she tells me different sites I need to check we are blocking.

Yes, that's the best way.

 

My own daughter is the same, pass on info to her to let her have a play and see if her lot notice and fix it... And she keeps me up to date with what they're banning, and dodgy sites her classmates find, which more than likely students here are visiting. That way when blacklisting discovered sites, no one knows the advice source, and the source will continue to provide as the blacklisting does not affect her.

 

Always have your out of school contacts! Another reason this site is so helpful!

Checked all of those... our LEA is on the ball again, every single one was blocked. Very sneaky though... I wonder, have they ever considered making a proxy website that doesn't actually contain the word 'proxy' and all the obvious key words/HTML that admins are definately going to block?

MY LEA are unable to block effectively because they are stupid.

 

Example:

 

You ask them to block say worldofwarcraft.com

 

So they block http://www.worldofwarcraft.com leaving open http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com and http://www.worldofwarcraft.co.uk and .net and .fr.

 

I tell them on many occassions to try blocking using * but they still do not get it. So now we bock via our own ISA server.

 

They really really are poor.

I have had a quick check and it has been used be a few students here, so I have been nasty ... I had a look at examstudies ... very nice site ... a little stupid of him to stick the links to who he is etc.

 

Someone might even drop a line to his college and let them know too ... and his college might be aware that they need to keep an eye on him now ...

 

Who would be so evil and nasty as to do that?

no need to block it, sites with bad words still goes through the content filter and gets blocked, but I'm hating these flash games. Bloody pain, the internet is slow enough already without 2mb games being downloaded, and what's worse is that the teachers allow it.
