hi just wondering if anyone ever had any luck finding out what was causing this, or more importantly how to fix this.

alot of it depends on who you get as your managed service provider, the situation here is that the original company has pulled out and now another company has taken over. i promise no cold call's, the job is an intergration engineer, so basially going out and setting up servers/switches etc.

Today is my last day at my current school, next week i start work at ramesys. Been working in schools for 5 years now, started as a technician and worked my way up. The main reason ive decided to move on is that my current school is being taken over by bsf in the very near future (they were supposed to start building last summer but has been delayed till this summer) im sick of waiting around for the ICT provider to come along and take over, no one had any idea of what or when something is gonna happen and over the past year the school has taken a back seat when it comes to IT they're just quite happy to wait around until BSF comes in and applies there magic. Edugeek has been an amazing resource while i've been working in school, and i will keep an eye on the site and hope that it will be a useful resource in my new job.

im not sure if its supposed to be case specific but the problem i had was that in the script the computer name had to be lower case otherwise i didn't pick it up ie instead of Case "PRN1" try case "prn1"

have a look at svs juice had a play with it a while back, it lets you install software to its own virtual layer. so you should be able to install both versions of office, and they should both act as if the other one is not there,

sun are one of the partners for BSF in leicester city, they currently have a test bed set up, they are using solarus for the front end, but they also have a windows server, so they can publish windows apps to the desktop. ive had a quick play and done a bit of testing seems to be working fairly well.

i use picasa, get it to scan the student area's, it will pick up all the images, then you just have to flick through them, its much better at scrolling through the pictures than windows search.

have a look at the trainnig materials from trainsignal. a bit more expensive than just books, its a set of video tutorials, you can get them on cd or an external harddrive. if you get the full set, you get all the training materials for mcse, its about $1000 and the exchange rate is fairly good at the min. trainsignal

computers for pupils im in leicester city and we've started going through this aswell, theres loads to think about, we've had one company trying to sell us a thin client solution, basically drop a thin client into each house, cuts down on the nickability and maintainence, also we've been looking at laptops probably gonna go down the laptop route but its still in the early stages for us.

at my last school we had a design teacher that had given his password out to a number of students. we also suspected that some of the students knew at least 2 other staff passwords. we sent round an email telling all the staff that due to a security breach ie students knowing a staff password that a number of sensitive documents with staff details on have been printed off by a student. (was a lie but got the message across) we also listed a number of other reasons such as the student would have access to there emails etc. therefore all staff need to change there password then from AD selected all the staff and ticked Change password on next logon, set the policy to, cant use the same password.

what about something like deep freeze or microsoft shared computer tool kit. you will be able to give the students that extra bit of access, and then just restart the pc to reset it back to normal. ive got a feeling that you can give them access the command prompt but then limit the tools they can use. ill see if i can find the instructions

Yes. The use of the test will be optional, but we strongly recommend schools to take part in the summer pilot and use the materials that will support assessment for learning.

we've got lanschool at my place. one of my fav features has to be the multiple remote control, found it really useful for situations like the ks3 test, ie get into the room 5mins before the lesson, log all the machines in one go, start the testing software on all the pc's. also really good if you need to install a piece of software on all the pc's in one room. ive heard the next verison which is in beta, has white/black list for websites, also has application blocking, as for security, if you look through the support tools there is a peice of monitioring software which will pick up all lanschool traffic across the network so you can find out if there is anyone running the teacher module

i haven't got a problem with thin client, but i think the main issue there gonna have is that they've chosen sun thin client. moving from windows fat to windows thin wouldn't be too bad but there looking at moving to sun(linux) thin, with the amount of software that has been purchased over the past few years (thank you e-learning credits) half of which hardly ever gets used, its a case of trying to get all these bits of software working on it.

im in leicester an the BSF bid was won by a company called Centerprise there looking at sun thin clients. the test bed should be up and running after xmas for us to go along and do some testing.

had the exact same problem with mine. had alook for replacement card's but they were around the £150 mark, you should be abe to get a second hand one for £100. ended up sharing the printer off the librarians pc.

try http://www.ergo.co.uk/ they have secure desks, few different models and designs. if your after ones with a pop up screen and your gonna use them in D+T be carefull, as there is usually a slight gap around the bit that pop's up, could get full of junk.

my school is currently going through BSF and the IT Service provider wants to use star office, which i haven't got a problem with. i agree with the whole 'you need to teach the kids how to use a Word Proccesor, Speadsheet and not Word, Excel' but the issue being raised at the min is when you look at job adverts they will normally state applicants need expericene with microsft office and not word prccessing or speadsheets. you get the same issue with windows and linux, ok fair enough most of the time your using an application and not the opperating system behind it, but how well are you equiping the students for the real world if you only teach them linux and open office or windows and microsoft office. some things you can get around, ie install office and open office, and let them have a go with both you could have windows and linux machines. but at the end of the day it comes down to time, have you got the time to setup and maintain both systems. but also teaching time, the ciruculum is already packed with so much have the teachers got the time to teach the students the difference. (all this in a world where some people don't know the difference between a computer and a monitor) which is one of the main problems i have with the curicuclum, so much time is spent teaching applications, creating databases, presentations, reports etc Yet very little if any time is spent teaching them what is a computer, why do we have a network, what is a network, could go on but need coffee.

vista does quite a few things out of the box internet explorer windows mail calendar paint cd/dvd writer media player wordpad games linux wins hands down but vista it not just a platform for comercial software, ubuntu doesn't come with 18000 packages it just makes them easy to install. wouldn't be hard to create a webpage with a list of thousands of pieces of software for windows. anyway i vote ubuntu

ive just changed from ntl to a tiscali adsl line, needed to go and get a wirless adsl modem. most of the ones i found were around £60+ although found a bargin in staples. linksys, not sure of the model number (sorry its at home) £40, because all the new one that are coming out are 128mb or 108mb, this one was a 54mb if you not fussed about the wireless transfer speed, ( remember that your internet speed wont be affected, it will only be your computer to computer transfer speed)
