I realise that alot is clipped out, however to get the best of both worlds (adding the union jack, and the stars) some of it had to be clipped. I did try rectangular flags, and whilst they did have the complete flag, it didn't look anywhere near as nice as the circular flags.

Maybe a fisheye type strech would be better for some as there are many flags that are also based on the full use of the rectangle. The others do look really good but I would personally be unhappy with such a heavily clipped version of the NZ one, could be just me though.

I realise that, hence why it has been clipped. However many Aussies and Kiwis that I know feel that the southern cross is more important than the union jack

huh? It's only a jack when it's flown from a ship. You mean flag.

In 1902 the Admiralty declared either use was acceptable, so since then you can call it either...

Actually it was jointly declared by parliament and the admiralty. 'Acceptable' != 'correct' though.

I think that if it included the centre point of the jack and at least parts of all the stars it would give a better sense of the flag itself maybe a slight scale with black margins to fill in the non flag bits at top and bottom would work. Again this is just my personal prefference of it but I do feel that national symbols should warrent a certain level of integrity... eek, someone is going to assign me to a rest home after that statment :)

with the jack being at the centre point, no stars can be seen on either flag....however I am looking at a slightly different version of things...

cant you move the stars over towards the jack, so the gaps allot smaller

I think SYNACK means that the centre of the union flag needs to be in the image (i.e. the rightmost and upper parts would be missing), not centring the whole thing on the union flag!

I may have explained badly, I meant having just a bit more than one half of the jacks horozontal length in view so the bit in the middle of the jack where all the points meet is visible on the circle. A little scaleing on the current one should achive this an allow for the stars to be visible, the far star could be only half visible just so long as it is there to complete the southern cross.

@nephilim

I hope you're going to add in the Buckinghamshire county flag, most counties in England are included but we're forgotten :(

Thanks elsiegee40, you were right

@nephilim - can you please post the source images so that I can have a crack at it (frameing).

It is closer, ideally I would like the jack to be in that kind of position but with all stars visible, this will only be possible with a scale and some bordered bits or an extention of the blue to fill in the circle.

@nephilim - Um, better but would like to try the scaled solution as the spacing is a little forced on it. Edited by SYNACK

Just a quick mockup

With some more tweaking it should be fine.

Those look good, they fit in all the elements to make it easily identifyable :)

Thanks

A very rubbish interpretation of what SYNACK said, I think... not got the right tools at home (or at least that's my excuse!)

EDIT and this thread moved on about 10 posts while I was uploading my image! :D

OK, What I shall do (based on sysmans design) is knock up a 512x512 orb, scale up the flags, make all the adjustments (to all flags) and then rezise back down to 128x128, 64x64 and 32x32...Sound reasonable?

however, how does this look?

Yes, and a preview of the South African one would be good, so I can critique it :)
