From the BBC F1 site:

We will not be able to provide F1 coverage in high definition this year. The BBC relies on Formula 1 Management (FOM) for the provision of all of its live pictures and as such the broadcasting of high definition pictures is dependent upon whether FOM uses HD cameras or not.

That is just so typical FOM - plonkers. F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of technology and engineering and they don't even bother broadcasting it in HD?

I'd say pretty much all programs now are probably filmed in HD quality, but whether they'll ever get broadcasted in HD is hit and miss at the moment. You would of thought Formula 1 would have a big enough audience.

Eventually when the digital switch over happens hopefully most channels will make the HD switch over. Just a shame we still have 2 years or so left in the UK until all areas make the switch.

Who wants to see MS's leering teutonic features in HD anyway?

Screw HD... F1's what should be going 3D, not bloody football, which is perfectly ok in 2D.

oooh your onto something there Tom :) I'd pay good money for 3D F1 :)

Just think - 2 cameras on each car. Imagine the feeling of speed flying through monaco... i'd pay to go to the cinema to watch that.

Comparatively little is - the BBC only has 6 HD capable studios in the entire country (3 at TV Centre, 3 in Glasgow) for example.

Following DSO, there will only be about 4 HD channels on Freeview HD. Sadly digital TV has become an exercise in cramming in as many channels as possible rather than taking advantage of the quality which is possible with digital transmission.

Bernie will be building up demand to squeeze enough cash out of the providers as possible

I thought that they did show it on the BBC HD channel last year but just used upscaling...

nope,

Its part of the BBCs mandate that they have to use at least 80% or something HD footage in any programming. Thats within the program so they could have a HD feed for the race and SD for the interviews.

Full upscaling would be classed as SD content still and wouldnt be allowed.
