Soulfish Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Since our librarian hated the scanner that came with Eclipse.net we ended up buying a new one off of insight and sending it off to MLS to be setup to work correctly. Before we purchased we checked that they were pretty sure they'd be able to get it to work though. Hope that helps

rh91uk Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 MLS only sell one kind of barcode scanner. It's not really very good (our librarian hated it!). As Soulfish said, we got ours off insight. If you contact your account manager (Laura Smith did ours) - she will take the scanner and get it programmed for you. This was done for us free of charge and then sent back. Very helpful.

dgsmith Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 We've just this week bought a Wasp WCS 3905 scanner from Misco (link), and found that whilst the scanner itself works and will read a barcode, it doesn't seem to fully work in Eclipse. There is an barcode config dialog in Eclipse where you can scan a barcode and it'll tell you if a config exists - it doesn't find one for the new Wasp scanner and even making a custom entry doesn't work (it finds a config obviously when using the old scanner though). We can scan for books when in the catalogue and it picks it up, but struggles to detect the book when in the circulate area. It seems with the Wasp scanner, it adds a carriage return after the barcode whereas the old scanner didn't and added a tab/bullet point before the number - whether this makes any difference I don't know! Any suggestions what we could do? Are these scanners reprogrammable (I can't see any drivers)? We have contacted MLS but they are slow in responding and our librarian would like it sorted asap!

The best thing to do has to be contacting MLS - hassle your account manager, that's what we did!
jamesreedersmith Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Most scanners come with a book of barcodes that you scan to configure it - changes things like carriage returns, start markers etc.
Ric_ Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I have to work with particularly picky librarians and they insist on having the bulky, cumbersome MLS scanners that cost a ridiculous amount of money. I did get them 2 WASP scanners for about £60 each and MLS sent us the setup codes which made them work perfectly IMHO.

I have looked in the book config although unless you know exactly how it is meant to be setup, it's a little tricky! It seems you can add things before and after (as I said the old scanner added bullet points) but understanding it seems harder than first thought..

Anyone who's got a scanner setup and working for eclipse, just scan something with it into notepad and you'll see what characters it sends. Any barcode scanner can be setup to work quite easily, normally using the control code book which comes with it - I did our new one in about 2 minutes once I knew the characters it sent. Mike.

That's the odd thing - in notepad it just appears as the code read and a line break, yet in MS Word or Wordpad, it adds a bulletpoint or number point at the start of it. That is the ONLY difference we can see, but it must mean something otherwise it would work, right?

Off the top of my head I think it sends a ~ before each code, but I can't remember precisely as it was a while back when I programmed our new one.

It seems it needs the character ~ before the code to work, once they told us this it was fine! Also annoyingly, they said if our old barcode scanner is faulty, we can send it back to MLS and they'll fix it for free and send it back for free! Just to let anyone else know that in case you buy a new one like we did.

Also found that we had to set the keyboard to US to get it to read the correct key when setting it (??) - much better now we bought USB readers - not the old serial type.

I just reprogrammed a heron D130 after the original scanner packed up and I had to make sure that the scanner was set to UK in order for the right prefix character to be sent which as has been stated is a ~ I now have a wasp 8905 which I bought as replacement for our asset management now that I've given our heron to the librarian but I don't like it so I'm going to try and program the wasp for the eclipse and get my heron back the only issue appears to be that the keyboard setup is only usa, french, german and some others but no english and as my system locale is UK programming the scanner for ~ actually generates a ¬ Logged a request with wasp but not heard back yet. Ben
