In my town, there was rain but no snow and partially blue sky at a place called Pevensey Bay. By the time I had driven just 5 miles to an area called Old Town which nestles in the foothills of the South Downs but is pretty much within the same town, there was thick snowfall, so yes, it is very possible. BUT it is chaos here as kids have been ringing their parents and saying things like " the school is about to close", and "others are going home" and asking the parents to come and get them. Which they have - even thought there is NO reason to. Mind you, most of the local schools have wimped out and closed - I can't see why - this is ridiculous even for the effete south. Quite possibly because of getting students and staff home? I live 15 miles from where I work, and had I gone to work Weds morning (when it was fairly clear), I would have had a hell of a struggle to get home again. A family member took 2 1/2 hours to do the same journey mid-afternoon. By late afternoon, the road was all but impassable. I am pleased our school took action early on in consideration of student and staff welfare. I don't believe it is a case of "wimping out"; over cautious maybe, but let's face it, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
elsiegee40 Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 Husband drove back to West Kent from Milton Keynes in just over 2 hours this evening. Minor roads a bit dodgy, but everything else fine, despite freeze. He says he prefers the M25 at the moment.. no traffic on it!

Amazingly, yesterday practically all the staff got in, some having to take the train. We had around 60% of the kids in yesterday. I think the parents appreciated us opening. Looks like rain for the end of next week, so maybe things will get a bit better, although I guess it will then be floods!

Trouble is, it's only going to take 1 kid to slip and break their arm, and those 'appreciative' parents will sue the school for negligence! I for one would love to be going to work, I love my job, enjoy the 30 mins of me time that it takes to get there and am getting serious cabin fever sitting at home! If we get a power cut now and I lose the Internet, I will go completely barking!

I don't particulary want the schools to close - I love my job too - I just want some nice snow like everyone else! We have compacted snow and ice now - much has gone but some streets (like the one mrwITch HAD to try and drive up this morning) are pretty much impassable. We lost the internet at work for three days this week, and I did go completely barking, at least until the boss let me go home and do the website stuff from there!

It's been snowing non-stop here all day, and with more forecast overnight, I can't see we are going to be back even on Monday. The snow is now as deep as the bottom of my car, a good few inches; much more and I'll be digging my way out! I've had enough now

First time I've seen one in 17 years living in Kent! It wasn't doing anything useful like spreading grit or ploughing the High Street; it was parked outside KFC!

6Foot2 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 We appear to have had a partial thaw overnight. I can see patches of tarmac outside and there is no snow/frost on the cars. No snow in the forecast for us either.
