So I am setting up my new HP Proliant ML350.

I unlocked the front door, slide in the HP disks into the array and.....the front door now doesn't close as the disks protrude too much due to the removal mechanism Do'h!

What has made you go d'oh recently?

Not leaving any space at the bottom of a rack when I put all the servers in. Now got a 1U server near the bottom being replaced by the manufacturer with a 2U unit , with not enough space left at the top to fit the new server and the bits that attatch to it:doh:

Having already walked down 4 flights of stairs on the other side of the building to install a phone on a new socket,

firstly not taking any cat5 with me, (walk back up, and back down)

then realising I had also forgotten my cab keys.

One that I seem to do time and time again getting a remote windows PC to release/renew it's DHCP lease. Open up the command prompt type ipconfig /release, hit enter and then realise what I've done :(

Always forget to use ipconfig /release && ipconfig /renew!

the giant magnet in the hard disk isn't for sticking it to the front of the case! :)

Hehe, I think this could turn into our version of Ars 'Server Room' forum 'What did you learn today?' thread. :D

Found out today Sun S7000 clustering is via SAS, not Fibre or Ethernet, which made my plan of clustering SANs between opposite sides of the site a little tricky.

Similar to Soulfish, I once disabled what I thought was a spare server NIC over RDP, then very quickly realised that was actually the NIC I was connected to the server on.

I was setting up a fancy network printer with a touchscreen once and used it to RDP to the print server to set up the printer share, the server popped up with 'Do you want to restart for Windows Updates now?' and my prodding at the small touchscreen hit Yes instead of No. Cue a phonecall to my boss telling him printers would be down for the next five minutes! :p

I was jus reconfiguring the network cards on the VMware hosts and removed the nic off of the wrong vSwitch... vMotion almost had a problem - noticed I was in the wrong switch just in time

Er.....just pushed them in :)

The ends of the disk stick out futher than the...

Is this going to end up being a story that made you go d'oh twice? :D

False alarm, I thought you could take the HDs out of their caddies and put them in the ones that came with the server.

Anyway, the caddies of the supplied disks stick out further than the caddies that were in the server when it came, hence the door not shutting.

he'll learn to get the rackmount version next time... they don't have doors to worry about :)

Don't get me started on that, I wanted the rackmount but we couldn't afford it.

do you need the door on it or can you just take it off?

Well...ideally I want to lock it, I discovered that the IT co-ordinator thinks its ok to switch servers off by holding the power button down

As there are hard disks on show I dread to think what could happen.

I think that alone would be reason to get a dedicated server room with a locked outdoor that only you have the key for!

surely if the door is locked then he'll just switch off at the wall/pull the power cable out?

cut off his fingers would be the better option or have a lock on the server room door that he can't get through

I put 4 disks straight into a NAS once and then noticed the guiding rails you were suppose to affix to the hard drives first. What a chump

I had to extract the disks with a pair of pliers - I'm pretty sure I held my breath the entire time!

Ok time to 'fess up to this one. :o

Turns out I hadn't inserted the disks correctly, I didn't realise that you had to open the locking mechanism, insert, then lock again.

Everything fits fine now *ahem* :o
