I love this distro, for anyone moving from windows are even experienced linux users who just want an easy life this is the one to go for! The wife is an Xp user but will slowly introduce her to Mint, my current PC is dual boot XP for her, Mint for Me! I have Linux Mint 6 on my desktop and Mint 7 on my laptop! Even though I like the slickness of KDE, I love the simplicity of Gnome. Anyone who has bad experiences with other distros, please give Mint a whirl! Anyway got to stop blabbering!
webman Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I use Linux Mint Xfce on my desktop at home, and mum has the Gnome edition on her computer. Works well.

Girlfriend Dual boots Mint7 with XP on her laptop and I'm going to put it on her new netbook on Thursday (at her request). I agree, it's nice and simple and has the important thing like flash and java ready to go out of the box.

Personally I'm sticking with Ubuntu but if you want a Windoze look then I don't see the problem with OpenSUSE. Yast is almost the same concept as control panel and its easy to find you way around.

Batman Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 On my 6 year old laptop, i tried OpenSuse - sound was dodgy, wireless didnt work - popped in Mint 7 and everything works! I think with any distro, and even from one release to another, you should expect something not to work... it's a bit hit and miss - I'm sure mint is not immune to it either. My colleague and I have identical computers, when he installed Ubuntu 9.10 the sound wouldn't work... worked fine with 9.04 and will probably work fine with 10.04 too. I'm using Debian on mine and never had a problem with sound, it just worked. Is Debian more user friendly as a result? Not really! Wouldn't say Ubuntu was any less either.

I installed Ubuntu on my home PC and everything worked but the graphics card. I was restricted to 640 x 480 resolution. I had to spend a couple of hours browsing forums until I found a solution to the problem. Simple modification of the drivers file and hey presto! All working fine. I've had a try on the livecd version of Linux Mint and it is very impressive. I haven't tried OpenSuse yet but I'm keen to experiment with the various Linux distros as I'm looking for an alternative to Windows because the price of buying a Windows OS and software is becoming so high.

tickmike Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 PCLinuxOS is my favorite, Mint is good. I have 'VirtualBox' installed and run XP from that if needed.
