OK Here goes.... My Desktop - Archlinux My Laptop - Archlinux My Home Server - Archlinux My Work Laptop - Windows 7 Pro with Archlinux in Virtualbox and GNUwin32 installed. My Mum's Laptop - Linux Mint My Sister's Laptop - Linux Mint My Sister's Old Laptop - Ubuntu I've been using Archlinux as my main distro for several years. Before that I've used Fedora, Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu and several others. The only Machine in the house I have yet to convert is my Dad's laptop. At work I mainly work with RedHat, CentOS and Scientific Linux although there is a good deal of Windows as well.

Not sure about the resolution, the boxes just have tty's and don't have a modeline set. The monitor reports the frequency at 72hz though which seems a bit high.

Nobody got any ideas? Is there a more relevant section I should post this in?

Hi folks. Today I installed a kvm console into our rack and connected all the servers up. The windows servers work beautifully. The linux ones however all look like this: (sorry about the quality) http://i.imgur.com/fPCJEN8l.jpg (The distortion constantly changes) It's running Scientific Linux 6.3. KVM is: Lindy 19" Modular KVM Terminal no: 21615 with KVM Switch - U16C Modular no: 39531 Video is connected via VGA, keyboard/touchpad via USB. I can't reboot the machines as they are in use 24/7 so if they require a reboot I'll have to arrange for downtime. Any ideas? If I unplug and reconnect the KVM it's clear for about 2-3 seconds then becomes distorted again. Any ideas? I'm at a loss.

Well I managed to get it working in the end. I tried multiple methods with no sucess and had lots of problems along the way but here's what ended up working: #1 Creating a new sharepoint site with the same DB name etc... #2 Using the restore feature to restore the content DB and the site settings with new names. #3 Manually replacing the new DB + site with the restored one. #4 A bit of stsadm magic with liberal use of overwrite. #5 Some manual work in sql management studio and text editors. #6 Manually fixing permissions #7 Restarting IIS Many incantations and a lot of voodoo was used in the process but it seems to have done the trick. The errors generated by the backup and restore feature were less than useful.

Hi folks. Last week we backed up our full sharepoint farm using the built in backup and restore feature. We were planning on restoring the farm to a virtual machine but it's currently failing. The cause is that the new virtualised server has a different name to the old server and we can't use the old name. So currently we're stuck with the sharepoint farm backup and we would like to get it up and running ASAP. Is it possible to restore the entire farm to the new VM (with a different name/IP to the old server) or is this going to be the stuff of nightmares? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I must confess to having bought a lot of "for rectal use only" stickers. The amount of things you can put them on that provide amusing results are countless.

I'm having no end of trouble even getting it to install. I'm trying to install Xubuntu on an older p4 system but after two keypresses it acts as if the 'A' key is stuck down and won't respond to anything but a hard reset. Bit strange as no other version has this problem. Usually you can just right click on the desktop, 'change desktop background' > 'fonts', and making the sizes smaller usually helps.

It was quite funny how many people I know got that BlackSOD. I just looked smug and said 'It wouldn't of happened if you used Linux'

I prefer to use CCleaner to msconfig. I have had a few glitches with msconfig in the past.

I have managed to do it through nautilus in the end. I was about to resort to removing the entry in smb.conf the I thought 'what if I shared it again , then deselected sharing and pressed the modify share button' so I did and it worked. Here is a screenshot of what I had before if anyone has seen anything similar.

I just set up a quick share to allow another computer to get some files. I then noticed I was already sharing another folder that I had forgotten to stop sharing so I stopped that one from sharing. When I got the files I wanted on my other computer I went to stop the share I had just set up but the sharing option is off even though I can see and access it on the network and I can't seem to stop it from sharing. Any ideas how to stop this share? I have tried renaming the folder. When I do this the share disappears from the network but when I name it back again the share re-activates. There is no icon telling me the folder is shared. I have tried rebooting, restarting the samba service and restarting nautilus but its still invisibly shared.

Ooooooooh......... thanks. * sigh of sudden understanding* So I've just been wasting my time ( as usual). LOL Oh well my excuse is I was using intel back then and as I'm 17 now I wasn't using computers that much then. I came in at a pentium I and 16 meg of RAM ( yeah I know luxury) and we also had a 1GB HDD *WOW* . Anyway I didn't start using AMD till this year. I'm starting to like them though. Have they stopped trying to trick their customers? LOL

Right, its now 10 past 1 AM, I am now trying it from a live windows cd with a USB to hold the files. BartPE did not work. When I ran the program the command line simply froze. This is just getting annoying. Now downloading FreeDOS. If this doesn't work I'm going to bed. POST 01:50 : nope freedos comes up with 'Interrupt divide by zero, stack' and a bunch of hex. Guess Ill just have to make do. Thanks for the help anyway.

I think I'm going to cry. I have just managed to install dos 7.1 and the stupid motherboard I'm trying to flash can't boot from any of my usb sticks. It is supposed to be able to and they even show up under the boot menu but it can't boot from them. My other computer can so its not a problem with the install. And you'll never guess what it said in the howto i was following. 'If you are unable to boot from usb then please try updating your BIOS' I honestly almost cried. Still I can always resort to a floppy, unstable or not.

Hmm nice. Just found this: DOS-on-USB - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com seems good. Will try it when I can get to a windows computer. All I have here at home is linux. I really need to get at least 1 computer with windows xp.........maybe even windows 7 just so I can use tools like this. thanks for the help.

How would you recommend booting DOS without a floppy. I have never managed to get dos to work from a cd. EDIT: ecs are recommending using a FDD and I've just found some instructions. Now all I need is a FDD. lol. EDIT2: It looks like I'm going to have to install windows temporarily just to get the rom. Bit annoying really.

I just looked at the manual but thanks anyway. The problem with a BIOS flash is that the tool supplied is an .exe and I have no computers with windows. Any ideas how I should go about this. I have considered booting BartPE and then running the utility from that off a memory stick but I'm concerned about how reliable that would be.

I have an ancient Elitegroup K7VMM+ ( i know its old) that used to run a duron. I replaced it with a 2.2 athlon but at first is only worked at 1500Mhz. As the BIOS does not have a function to change the FSB I had to change it with a jumper on the motherboard but it can only change between 100 and 133 so the processor is only running at 1800Mhz ( a small improvement). Any ideas how to get this ancient ***** functioning as it should be or will I just have to live with it?

I have seen clonezilla used before but only over a network and I wasn't aware that It could clone in the same machine. One query though, How does it handle differently sized disks?. I may go down this route.

Yes the motherboard has both IDE and SATA but it is quite old Ubuntu is using Grub2 as of 9.10 so its now sudo install-grub && sudo update-grub i think. Thanks for the help

To put it shortly I have an old IDE hard drive that is beginning to die. I want to replace it with a nice new 500GB hard drive but I don't want to reinstall, I just want to clone the HDD to the new 500Gb one. I need the software to be free and I cannot run it from a windows machine so either a linux program or a live CD would be great. Also if possible I would like it to also copy the MBR and obviously the partition layout. Any ideas appreciated.
