I definitely agree there. Experts and noobs are fine to give linux to but when you try to feed linux to someone in between they complain because its not in their comport zone so they freak out. For instance this is the response of a friend during a MS vs Linux conversation. And as the conversation went on it just proved he thought he knew everything about computers and linux just wasn't in his comfort zone. I guess you just like what you've used most and know most about.

H'mm I just went on the ubuntu website and ordered a free CD as my Internet is playing up at the moment. Ive been using ubuntu 8.10 since its release and have been a bit skeptic about upgrading. I prefer a clean install so I'm going to wait till the CD comes so I have a good copy. Is it very different to 8.10? I don't really like change. Maybe the release is still a bit buggy? Or it might just not like your machine. Have you tried it in another machine or virtually?

I was subscribed to Debian-devel, debian-announce, and a couple of others so yeah it got pretty heavy. At the moment im a beginner in development, Sure ive made themes, skins, splash screens, login themes and I can use vim to make short shell script programs using zenity and Kdialogue but ive never really got further than that so thats why im subscribing to the lists so I can kinda work out how its all done and hopefully do a bit myself.

Ok guys its all good. I found out of you go to message filters you can set emails from a specific address or that contain specific words to a separate folder. Now why couldn't I find that earlier???

Not too sure where to post this so im just dumping it here. I kinda want to subscribe to the Debian mailing lists but I am a bit of a control freak and like to be well organised. I was subscribed for a while but the ammount of mail was killing me. What I'd like to do is set up Thunderbird (using IMAP) to automatically put all mails from Debian into a specific folder instead of my inbox. Its not exactly urgent but its just one of those nice things. I only read my mail on this machine so I only need this done once and as I am using AOL (where's my silver stake and holy water) I can't do it inside my aol mailbox. If there's no way to do this I don't mind too much and ill just set up a 12th email address for debian. lol

I agree that Virtualbox is great but personally I think it still needs a lot of refining. I prefer VMware.

It seems that Dragon Player is just the renamed continuation of Codeine. Dragon Player uses Phonon so it should play anything (apparently) but it is made for KDE.

Dragon Video player huh, ill try that Anyway I have removed Mplayer and completely reinstalled : Totem Totem-gstreamer Totem-xine Totem and totem-gstreamer (with the help of some more codecs) now play menu's fine but can't fast forward or slide through dvd's. Totem-xine plays Dvd's fine and seems to do everything still but still gets that annoying blurring at the bottom of the movie but only on .avi files now. Have reinstalled VLC and it plays everything fine except for movie downloads which it produces errors for but that is mostly just for .flv files now which only totem and totem-gstreamer will play. If I disable the errors however it seems to play them fine without a problem.

Recently I have had a few problems with video players on my Ubuntu box. Ive been using Totem for all my .AVI Downloads and Vlc for Dvd's as totem would not show the menu's no matter how many plugins i installed including gstreamer-plugins-ugly and the ubuntu-restricted-extras. I eventually installed Totem-xine which works with DVD menu's and most other movie formats but when it comes to play avi's i get a small part of the bottom of the movie which is blured. I have tried MPlayer but have had far too many problems with that and VLC has errors with some of my mpg or mpeg files which only the original totem-gstreamer will play. Does anyone know of a movie player which is nice and simple like totem that will play everything including dvd menu's? Thanks in advance.

Personally I prefer linux to MS. Im an A level student and have been using different linux distros for years and feel way more comfortable with linux than with MS. Apple has its uses especially in the design, art and music industry and is nice and shiny for home use but linux is more free in every way. Obviously the price is an issue but the way in which you can modify and play with your system is much better on linux. Its so easy to make new splash screens, new themes and login windows and personalize linux. I see Linux (and UNIX) as the future, I mean look at how fast Apple have risen from what they used to be. RHEL (red hat enterprise linux) and solaris are becoming far more popular in businesses. My school/6th form uses a mix of linux (fedora), MS and apple, and out of the three i prefer the linux. Its faster, easier to use, nicer looking and far more customizable. Now that Dell and several other companies are selling Personal computers with Ubuntu and servers with a choice of linux distro Linux is starting to seem like a much bigger contender. All linux needs to become more common at home is more advertising. The amount of MS adverts out there is huge but the only places I see adverts for linux distro's is on the Internet in geeky sites and forums. LINUX NEEDS MORE ADVERTS!!!

Hey guys I think we all need to chill out a bit. Now we can sit at home and use linux, content that we use probably the best operating system out there, while the rest of the world just thinks were cheapskates. I mean if everyone used linux we wouldn't be special.

Of course ubuntu is 'real linux' and actually I use it at home on my nice shiny machine, but shh we don't want everyone to find out linux is so easy to use or we won't be special any more.

Well done but now that you've used linux you need to use 'real' linux. Try to use slackware and then move on to unix derivatives such as FreeBSD and OpenSolaris Good Luck with the weekend

Personally I use sh for this purpose in vim. Theres nothing easier than vim program.sh ..... sh program.sh or you can chmod -x program.sh ./program.sh

For the past 6th months i've been using an old radeon 9200 in my machine but for some reason the dvi output has stopped working. Last night it was working fine with no problems but today it has just stopped working. The vga works fine. When i turn on my computer with the dvi plugged in, my monitor does the usual and goes from amber to green but the screen remains blank. This is not terribly urgent but i would like it fixed as its just one of those annoying worries i could do without. thanks Matt

personally when having problems with suse i always booted up into the command line and simply typed yast. It gave me enough settings to fix most problems i came across. If its just the desktop effect thingy then there is a setting in yast to fix it. If you go to sax2 when in yast it resets the X11 system so fixing most problems hope this helps

OK ive given up on this for the night and won't be able to carry on working on this until approx 5:30PM GMT. As a temporary solution ive uninstalled xorg-driver-fglrx and CCC and it is working fine as it used to but I do want to get the proper ati drivers working as some of my programs have problems running without them. Please post any possible solutions but I won't be able to respond untill 5:30 so don't be offended thanks again

yep as i thought the installer didn't work heres how it went so not too good and xorg.conf looks like this which is weird thanks for any more ideas

this seems hopeful right now im following some possible ideas on linuxquestions which say there is a glitch in the package but the gui installer works so i'm trying that if that fails could you tell me where the old drivers are thanks
