  1. I built my new Home 'Backup Server' last year and never got around to moving over the Two ( full of Data !) 2T hard drives 'Raid 1' Mirror from the old server to the new one. My old Backup server only had Two x 2T 'Raid 1' Mirror drives but the new one I have 3 pairs of 2T drives in 'Raid 1' Mirror, Raid set 1, Raid set 2, Raid set 3. I am using 'mdadm' software Raid. I want to replace the Raid set 1 (No Data on them ) drives on the new server with the old ones. What is the correct way to do it with out loosing any data.
  2. Building A New Home Backup Server/Store. Since my 5 year old backup NAS is full 2 x2TB drives, and the desktop pent III is getting old now (some bulging capacitors !) I bought a new 10 drive bay space case ( with more capacity ), and 4 new 2TB drives. PS and Gigabyte GA-H170M-DS3H MB with 6 x SATA ports. I will use my two old 2TB dives out of my old unit and another SATA HD for the PCLinuxOS Darkstar OS to run it. I want to set this machine up with 6 x 2TB 3.5" hard drives for now, Then using two raid cards have spare capacity for expansion if needed. Three Raid sets all 'Raid 1' Mirror. Raid set 1 = (my two old hard drives ) SATA port 0 & 1 on the MB (not fitted yet !). Raid set 2 = 2x2TB drives SATA port 2 & 3 Raid set 3 = 2 x 2TB drives Sata ports 4 & 5 I have got in to the MB Raid set up screen and can see the four 2TB drives, set up Raid set 2 ok using ports 2&3 , but then trying to set another raid set 3 up with Raid 1 mirror it will not let me set it up. Any ideas why ?. Can you normally set up more than one mirror raid set on a motherboard ?. or Should I just forget the MB raid set up and use Mdadm ?.
  3. Have You Checked Your Firewall Logs Lately ?. I am seeing in my Home Hardware Firewall (Smoothwall SWE3.1) hundreds/ thousands of hits on Port 23(TELNET) some on 2323 and 22 I have page after page of logs that show the hits are getting more and more each day. :'( This is the MIRAI and its variants (MEMES being one of those) Malware. My firewall is working overtime but doing a good job. Anyone else seeing anything ?.
  4. Thanks for feedback. @ elsiegee40 PM Sent . The facts as I know them, while I was visiting her last week I looked at her laptop network settings, using DHCP to the firms LAN IP = 10.255.156.223, Gateway of 10.255.156.1 DNS 10.255.156.2 Netmask 255.255.255.0 I could see there feed comes through a 'pfsence' Hardware Firewall. Checking her laptops Network IP address / Gateway and DNS settings I noticed the DNS and Gateway where different and it looks like it's DNS server is the the mail server for this firm ! I did try to view the Gateway IP address in a web browser and it seems to bring a 'ThisFirm's web page up. I then did the same with the DNS IP address and got a 'login' page for there internal mail server It looks like there server has lots of services running on the same server, DNS, email hosting etc... and all using the same external IP address, as they use different ports . It is the external IP address has an rdns of mail, thisfirm.url The website for the firm and all there Ethernet LAN is handled via another IT. . I can access the laptop via 'Teamviewer' from home to do maintenance . Because our home ISP = Eclipse (Kcom) she cannot use there SMTP mail servers on port 25 as she does at home, I have set it up to use SMTP.gmail.com port 587 for the outgoing mail server, this has worked well while she was at uni and other courses for the last 5 years. On her laptop I have an automatic back up system (using 'Luckybackup') to my server at home and that sends me an email using 'sendEmail' via the command line (Linux Terminal ), looking at one of them at the headers/source code I can also see the rDNS company name on that as well. re. 'I would use postfix to strip out internal server names from headers' not sure what post fix is. !.
  5. You can still view email headers on iphone which she uses.
  6. I think the use of unauthorized VPN are not permitted !. A VPN to where ?
  7. Is There A Way To Hide A Domain Name In A Private Email ( not the firms Emails ! ) Message Headers/Source Code. ? My daughter has started a new job and gets free accommodation with it and free internet which is run off the sites main domain server on a separate .net LAN which I would think does admin offices and shops and other staff accommodation etc. On a test private email she sent me to our home, looking at a email message header/source code I can see one section says ' Received: from localhost.localdomain (mail.domain name of firm.net. [xxx.xx.xxx.188]) ' >>>>>Name of firm and it's IP address removed !<<<<< It looks like this internet facing IP address for the firm has rDNS, using 'Whois' gives the location etc. It's telling the world (if you know how to view an email header !) where she works and worse still where she lives, which nowadays for a young lady living alone is not a good idea. A email test using a web mail Does not show the firms name or IP address eg Gmail, she uses 'Thunderbird' mail browser on a 'PCLinuxOS' run Laptop. The flat is served by a (locked) WiFi access point from the local LAN . If I set her a separate access point / LAN for her flat could it be configured to hide the firms name on the emails sent ?.

  9. I have a AP6522 Access Point for use at home / garden. 1..Does anyone know if you have to use all four aerials ? 2...Is one aerial transmit and the other receive on one radio ? 3.. What 'telnet' command do I use to change the radio channels ?
  10. Are you talking about the access point works well ?. Did you use coax cable with it ?.
  11. I've now got a Motorola-AP6522 and 4 outside/inside aerials, POE. Extreme ML-2452-HPA5-036 - Antenna outdoor 2G5G3dB Omni http://www.thebarcodewarehouse.co.uk/Assets/Documents/Motorola/Motorola-AP6522-Datasheet.pdf Does anyone know how much coax I could use for the aerials before I get bad attenuation of the signal ?
  12. I have a old WRT54GS (Router) that I used for an internal Ethernet cable fed 'WiFi access point' only, it has Two removable aerials and I was thinking of using one, waterproof it and mounting it on my outside gable mounted TV and FM aerial mast, The top of the mast is about 2 metre above the ridge, mounting the WRT54GS in side and using some coax cable to connect the two. I want to improve the WiFi coverage all over my large garden as it has one or two dead area's at the moment. With the Bipolar aerial it should radiate to all my garden as the house is in the center of the half acre garden. Will it work ?
  13. I spent more time on this today. The problem seems to be the part of first cable that I put in 20 years ago to my garage (about 40 metre's long) which turns out to be 4 core screened to 'Def 10' standard, it was never intended for Ethernet but it was worth a try. I tried sending internet down it but it was very poor, so even with another switch there it did not stand much chance of sending Ethernet to my workshop. The cable route to my garage and workshop is now converted for telephones use and works very well for that. Thank you all for your help.
  14. 1. Have I got the pins right ?. 2. Would anther switch at 25 Metre's help ?. 3. Even if the cable was too long / not the correct type would the three lights on the on the switch light ?.
  15. Ethernet Cable From House To Workshop, will not work. I have used some Ex BT SWA underground (Drop-wire that was left after BT man did not take it away some years ago) , It's two twisted pair and I have used a short piece of Ethernet cable 2000mm long to join on to it at the house end and it has a RJ45 socket at the other. House to Workshop Ethernet cable to RJ45 socket Pair one Pin1 Pin 1 Pin 2 Pin 2 Pair two Pin 3 Pin 3 Pin 6 Pin 6 It's about 150 Metre long. Plugging the house end in to a Switch No lights show up, plugging the workshop end in to either another switch or my laptop do not connect.! I have tested the cable for continuity with an test meter (Each core = 5.6 ohms that's by shorting out one end to the SWA and using a test meter at the other SWA to core being tested.) Also test for insulation between each conductor also to SWA all ok. What am I doing wrong ? Why does it not work ?.
  16. Hi. Do you mean wake up via Lan on her laptop ?, if you do then it would not work as it's not a fixed IP Address in her digs (Landlords router). Might work the other way around eg. when her laptops on it puts my server on.
  17. Does anyone know of a way to show that a 'Remote Server' is turned on ? Trying to think of a way to give an indication on the 'Bottom panel' (system tray) on my daughters Linux laptop when my remote backup server is running so if I forget to switch on my server (like I did last night) and her laptop then missed doing it's backup which is started via a 'Cron job' 30 minutes after boot up, but it could be started manually . I have fixed IP Address's at home. PCLinuxOS
  18. If anyone does a search this is what my ISP said. "I can confirm that the subnet masks will be different. For your WAN you only have the One IP which is why you have 255.255.255.255 You Lan has a block of 6 Usable Addresses which is why your subnet mask is 255.255.255.248" Hope this helps.
  19. For my home network I was given a HG612 modem (these will work on ADSL,Fibre,Ethernet ), I have UN-locked it . At the moment we still have ADSL internet connection and I have been attempting to set it up with my block of static ip's x.y.z.104 to 111 (with 6 usable ) SubNET mask 255.255.255.248 Setting the HG612 LAN x.y.z.105 255.255.255.248 MY smoothwall box uses x.y.z.110 255.255.255.248 With it working on line I see the WAN address of x.y.z.104 255.255.255.255 If I have set it up right in bridge, no NAT, no Firewall should I not see the WAN subNET mask of 255.255.255.248 ? or maybe I have Not got it in bridge mode ::. 20. I just use Luckybackup luckyBackup - backup and sync utility and set it to run via a 'cron' job.
  21. Thanks . At home I use a 'Smoothwall Box' so I have to be careful of 'Double Natting' that's why I used bridged in the VM and we have no problems connecting to the Uni cloud from home. So it looks like you say set the VM to NAT'ed while she is at the Uni halls and it should see only one Mac address.
  22. Disconnected From the Network. I took my daughter back to uni and while I was in her private halls I had chance to check her 'Linux' laptop was working ok. Her halls are supplied by Emnet for the internet and the user policy says that only one computer shall be connected. I connected via Ethernet cable to the internet ok. Checked printer worked ok . Next checked the uni cloud. I booted up a virtual win7 computer (as it's a Linux laptop It will not connect to the uni cloud, that's why We have to use a Win7 virtual computer) , this is connected to the internet through a 'Bridged' connection, once on the desktop I clicked on the 'Cloud' that opens up the uni cloud which is also run on a Windows 2008 server and is another virtual computer for the cloud. It connected to the cloud desktop ok, I logged out of the cloud. Next I said to my daughter while I was in Win7 virtual computer I would download itunes and install it for her so she could move photo's from her iphone to the laptop for storage, the download stopped at 30%, after waiting 30 minutes all I could do was to shut down the virtual computer. I then found we had been disconnected from the internet by 'Emnet' and had to accept the user policy again and the it connected to the internet. Do you think Emnet detected another Mac address of the virtual computers and believed we were trying to connect more than one computer ?. I would think Emnet would be monitoring the 'Mac address' of the Ethernet card in the laptop, but would they see also the Mac address of the virtual computers ?
  23. I contacted the head of ICT and they now find they have a external gateway problem
  24. It looks like her uni servers are down I took my daughter to her friends house and it would not work there, then she asked some of her uni mates and they said they could not get on it ..great four days wasted. I will keep you updated, thanks for advice.
  25. Yes and I opened 3398 . I tried 'bridge' network connection in virtualbox and set up the win7 firewall and my network one. I use 'Smoothwall' as my network firewall. I also set up a win7 dual boot on the laptop, but it still will not connect when running from windows, it's got to be smoothwall !. three days doing it.!!!! She needs to do her uni work.
