  1. I'm building a home NAS / with remote automatic daily backup from my daughters laptop while she is at uni. I will use an old PenIV with two 2TB sata drives and a cheap raid card from Amazon Neewer 4 Port Serial ATA SATA to RAID PCI Card Adapter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics It will be booted from an SD card/IDE adapter with PCLinuxOS Minime on it. It will run 24/7. I have used info from Linux Software Raid 1 Setup Create RAID 1 Linux Create Software RAID 1 (Mirror) Array After 11 hours the drive md0 was formed but I can not see it in 'Dolphin' It does show up in PCC>diskdrake. 2. I think that my free Linux backup software 'Luckybackup' is the GUI front end for 'rsync' and I can set up passwordless remote ssh connections over port 22 . I did a test over my home network last night and all went well. On my 'Smoothwall' firewall I'm going to add a DMZ then connect that to my backup server.
  3. If her laptop got stolen at uni , they would probably steal the external hard drive as well !. Edit.. @Arthur I will read up about 'Crash-plan' I'm just doing a fist trial of my system using 'luckybackup' over my home network, to test the basics.
  4. Not paying out for it !. My system is free !.
  5. Design For Automatic Remote Back System Wanted. I'm starting to think about what I need to do a 'Nightly' back up on my daughters laptop (Acer With PCLinuxOS on it ) when she goes to uni next year. I have contacted the two main uni's she is interested out of her five offers and it looks like the backup will have to be instigated from her laptop end, because with them using Nat For there IP address's as I will not be able to reach it from my end. I will be using 'LuckyBackup' luckyBackup - backup and sync utility as it has a good ssh remote backup part. I have a speedtouch 636 None NATing router with a block of my own fixed IP address's (with it's firewall turned off). From the speedtouch it goes into my Dedicated Firewall 'Smoothwall' Express Open Source Firewall Project (The Free one ) I will put a DMZ. From DMZ it will go to a 'to be built 'Backup server' (lightweight Linux based) . I need any advice about making the connection from her laptop to my backup server and what I will have to do about making my server hidden but accessible from the internet. Any tips about what to look out for and do to make it a safe system and not Hackable !.

  7. Well I did try that yesterday, but it did not work. Moved over to another test machine, it will not connect using DHCP, But it will using Static IP's .. odd . I have tried the reset button, it should go back to factory defaults ? , not sure it is . I've got two of these and they are acting the same, it's got to be something silly I'm doing. In the manual it says "the default IP and subnet address of the WLM-L11G is 1.1.1.1 and 255.255.0" I think that's a misprint !. But I did try 255.0.0.0 , with the pc ip = 1.1.1.2 and that also connected. In the manual I can see different ip's they have in there screen shots but none work to access the setup screen. Manual http://www.buffalotech.com/files/downloads/WLML11GManual.pdf
  8. Hi All, Happy New Year. I have been trying to access the setup screens via hard wiring with RJ45 cable the access point to a test linux machine with no firewall or proxy. This is some of what I have tried. 1. Powered it up, pressed 'init' reset button. 2. On a test computer, RJ45 cable to the above. 3. Set pc's IP = 192.168.11.2 255.255.255.0 gateway/DNS = 192.168.11.1 4. Connects to access unit. (I can also connect via Wifi ) 5. Open browser (with No proxy) http://192.168.11.1 Cannot connect. I have tried various Ip address's for the pc and browser none work. On the manual it says use the CD to set up .. I do not have a CD !. Any idea what I'm doing wrong ?.

  12. I'm getting my Daughter a laptop for xmas and I'm a bit worried about the low battery life of 2-3 hrs. that's not going to last all day. What I wanted to know if it possible to plug the charger in when you go into lessons or is that a no, no. We used 'slide rules' (before calculators ! ) when I was at collage.
  13. On our local news tonight it said that this seriously ill boy had been realest to go home !. I thought he was dying ? !!!. I'm not involved much in schools at the moment, but what my daughter has told me about discipline in her school.. There is none, there is no respect for adults and others by a lot of young people nowadays . When I was at school if you was told not to speak in class you did not, for those that would not be quite they had the slipper first and the cane next if they disobeyed then sent to the head and was sent home, good old days.
  14. The next update to make your PCLinux2007 up to date is due very soon. See This post. PCLinuxOS There will be a fully updated ISO image available soon that you will be able to install after burning a CD / DVD image. REMEMBER BACK UP FIRST
  15. Ok, I never considered that .
  16. For many years I have used MS both at home and at the school I used to help with the IT, But with all the Anti Virus / Malware / Spyware Updates I was doing to keep it running I decided to try PCLinux2007 PCLinuxOS and never looked back. I have dual boot with XP . But I have NOT used XP for more than a year . My Daughter is used to using Linux and is happy to open a 'Virtual XP computer' if she needs to use say powerpoint etc. Also she will not have to worry about updates.
  17. Thanks. I was thinking laptop than a notebook. She will be doing coarse work on it and I was going to install PCLinux and XP Pro on VMware or VirtualBox .
  18. My Daughter is wanting a Laptop soon for uni . £££ I have never had any dealings with Laptops, so I need some advice on a suitable type / make. It Must be able to use PCLinux on it , (Can you buy them without any software installed ? ) Suggestions for ram / HDD Etc. Price, Size, Supplier.

  21. I will retry this. Edit... Have found 'Grsync' with a GUI font end on it.
  22. Thanks. I forgot to say that because others may use the tool I would like a GUI type.
  23. What I want is a way to keep my remote computers around my network, synaptic updates in sync. with the main computer where I have downloaded the updates. eg. /var/cache/apt/archives I have tried "Unison" could not get it to work. "Komparator" sort of worked, but not what I wanted. "grsync" no good for a network. Do you know of any file synchronisation tools that will work over a network. OS = PCLinux
  24. HI, I have been using PCLinOS 2007 (pc linux) http://www.pclinuxos.com/ There is a lightweight version 'MiniMe' Also 'TiniMe' made for older machines, you just add from 'synaptic' what programs you want. I find it more like Windozzz.. more than 'ubuntu' is. EDIT. I have tried Tinyme on an old 125MHz with 196Mb Ram and It worked !.
  25. Got it working by, Downloading Firefox add-on 'Mime Edit' Then I could delete the open with file connection I made (screen shot one) and re make with /usr/lib/ICAClient/wfica. And It works each time now... Thanks all, see you again soon. ps...I like the new look of the forum .
