Which antivirus?

Which antivirus would you recommend for schools?

 

At the moment we have symantec but the problem is with the yearly client licenses you have to buy as well as it slows machine log ons!!!

 

Can you recommend anything?

Sadly, I think you'll find all paid for ones are going to be yearly.

 

But yes, it does slow them down, we learnt to live with it at the old place knowing it did a pretty good job though.

We use Kaspersky 6.0 which has been really good and always comes either top or not far away in the general AV ratings. They've just released an update to support Windows 7 and added a bunch of new features which I was pleased about. We previously used McAfee which bogged the systems down a bit.

Just ordered Nod32 on a 3 year licence with the exchange plugin from Yellowbus and got a very competative price.

I'd avoid Kaspersky, I've just moved 300 machines back from 6.0.4 to 6.0.3

 

Even performance on 6.0.3 can only be described as "acceptable". 6.0.4 is terribly broken.

 

Was on Nod v3 last year, much better performance, but v4 has some issues I believe.

Used Kaspersky back in version 5 days then had sophos last year but gone back to kaspersky and version 6 , latest update is working well on windows 7 machines . The support is also second to none.

do they not have an update or something that fixes the issues with version 4 - re call another post on edugeek where someone was having issues with version 4 on a server and was either advised to down grade the version on the server or to do a software update or not have it installed on a server at all ( cant remember exactly )

Another vote for NOD32 here. Best AV I have had for a long time.

We have Symantec here also - wouldn't say i'm a fan or dislike the product but it comes free via the LA, so thats why I use it.

Have had it at a few places I have worked and have found it really grinds the computer to a halt in comparison to nod32 or mcaffee

 

I uninstalled it the other day for about a half hour and my computer was fine and re installed it and it was back to its old self of taking for ever to do anything - then again I don't have access rights to amend / change the config as they have set it up to do updates every 15 mins and to scan 3 or 4 times a day so prolly setup totally wrong - some confirmation would be good.

I'm curious as to what your secret is. I'm unable to turn anymore components off, even without ant active kaspersky processes running I'm still seeing terriblly slow system.

 

Login takes 3 times longer on the same machine when MP4 is put on and returns to normal when moving back to MP3. We aren't talking old machine here either, all core 2 with 2GB RAM, Vista or XP it makes no difference.

 

Support have been unable to fix it, beyond going back to the old version and logging it as a fault. There were infact unconvinced as to my slowness until I sent a video with flash taking some 23 times longer doing the same thing after the AV was installed.

Conficker was cleaned up and we were still using MacAfee on a trial basis.

 

Logon times were painfully long [especially so on older spec machines]

 

Moved back to our Sophos solution [and installed VLans] and the network came to life!

I can supply more detail when I am at work [VPN does not work at the moment] but basically we have Sophos auto detecting when new stations are added to Active Directory and deploying Sophos to the station based upon OU [No intervention from administrator required (most of the time)]

I have used Sophos in past jobs but havent used it for a long time so cannot comment but when I did use it, it was a good bit of software, especially central management of it. If things are like they used to be its good

I started by creating a group in Sophos Console. With this group selected I clicked on 'Groups/Synchronize with Active Directory' from the Munu bar.

 

Sophos will then ask for the container [Organisational Unit in Active Directory] you want to synchronize with. Click 'Browse' and locate the OU [i have broken my Sophos deploy down into two broad groups: Servers and Worstations/laptops]

 

Once you have found the container Sophos will display a confirmation dialog box. Click 'Next'

 

Select 'Install Sophos Anti-Virus automatically', 'Remove third-party security sofware automatically' and click 'Next' [unless you want to use Sophos Firewall and Sophos Network Acess Control: we don't use them here]

 

Enter the username and password of the user which will install/update Sophos [username in the form 'Domain\Username' Click Next.

 

Leave the synchronization interval at 60 minutes [default] and click 'Next'

 

Another confirmation dialog box is displayed with no changable items is displayed. Click 'Next'

 

A final dialog box is displayed. There is a tick box which allows you to set up E-Mail alerting when new computers are found in the OUs you have just synchronized. I set the alerting up at a later stage [one thing at a time]

 

Click 'Finish'

 

And you are done. If there are OUs within the OU you have just synchronized they will be included also.

 

Note that the group is now locked and cannot be deleted until synchronization is removed.
