Any chance you could post back and let us know how you get on and which distro you went with, personally I was thinking about ubuntu / open suse myself as was contemplating having my machine tri booting ( OS X, A linux Distro and Windows either Xp or 7 ) as there is an opensource app that you use as to select / pick which OS you want to load as apposed to using the bootcamp OS Chooser by holding down Alt.

 

Anyway just as a side note - compiz is pretty good, takes a bit of configuring but nice effects etc:D

sure thing fella, I think I am going to go with the partition hard drive and install Ubuntu edition for now :cool:

If you want to try Linux without any partitioning get Sun's Virtualbox, excellent for trying out OSes.

 

Agreed, I've got Ubuntu running very nicely on my Win7 laptop through virtualbox. Had to use the alternative installer iso, the text only one, though as the live CD version hung when selecting anything from the menu.

I had a simular issue installing ubuntu within virtual box, i upgraded my virtual box to the latest one and made sure ACPI was on. All works fine and dandy.

 

A note for if your using it withing Virtual box, make sure you use the brigding adaptor when configuring a network card. That way it hangs on the network like a real box.

Ubuntu is very good, I have it installed on a few PC's and cant fault it, fedora is also worth a look, just as good in my opinion...

It's good. I used to have a vanilla XP machine but I decided to go ubuntu at work.

Regarding Virtualbox and RM. It works very well. I have a standard RM Workstation and I have a virtualbox RM Clean Machine for making packages. Take a snapshot when the machine is clean and you can go back to a clean state in about 10 secs. Great for making RM packages!

Mike, I used to do this until the latest version of VirtualBox. When I try to make a clean machine now it just hangs on "scanning for drivers". Did you have to do anything special to get this working (drivers or something)?

 

Its been driving me nuts for ages as this is so useful.

mmm... My clean machine was not made using the new virtualbox 3.0.

If it's getting stuck on scanning drivers, maybe version 3 is using different drivers. I'd recommend making up a vanilla xp machine. Install the Virtualbox 3.0.x guest drivers. Then use Portable DML (link) This will grab the drivers in a format that you can then move into your XPBuild folder (/RMManage/RMRebuild)

 

If that doesn't work. Then try making Vanilla XP Machine again install the guest drivers then make it into a CC3 workstation via the SmartClient process.

I've tried it, and it worked fine for me, using the latest VirtualBox. Also used an ISO image with all of the network drivers i could find with CC4.
