pda with barcode

Hi,

 

I'm looking for a PDA with a Barcode reader that will scan directly into a text feild within a webpage. Does anyone know of such a device?

Thanks, but anything more like a PDA, looking for somthing i can get on ebay cheaply if possible.

We have some Symbol MC35 devices here, which work ok. They're not brilliant, but they work. They have the usual limitations of a Windows Mobile 6 device, namely that the browser sucks and they're very ugly.

 

If you're interested in doing a bit of development work, you could use an android based phone, and develop a custom browser application which allows you to scan into text fields - you'd just need to tie it in to the built in barcode scanning functionality.

does that built in functionaility use the phone's camera ?

 

see, i like the idea of that. A brick like suparmarket-style scanner or even a relatively svelt pda with a CF scanner are so old hat in my view.

Yes it does use the camera. It is a lot slower to do a scan with them though, as you have to line up the barcode in the box on screen perfectly before it'll scan.

 

With laser/led scanners it is a very quick process to scan a barcode as you just have to point the scanning beam at the code and beep, done.

 

It depends how many barcodes you're going to be scanning. If, like us, you're only doing a few (asset management type stuff), then a camera based scanner is fine. If you're going to be scanning a lot, then you really want a proper scanner.

but they're expensive! (Had one at my last place and I don't think we paid hundreds for it; it just plugged into the SD slot on a Dell Axim PDA)

Netbook + webcam as a barcode scanner?

If you go for a netbook you may as well go for a usb barcode scanner.

 

I have a toshiba NB200 and Heron usb barcode scanner for asset management.

And if you're going for a the camera phone option - it might be worth looking into 2d barcodes if you don't have existing ones (much higher fault tolerance depending on the endcoding, and easier for a camera to read....)

I'm guessing you mean QR Code barcodes, and I'd agree - they are more fault tolerant, and you can get a lot of info in a very small space. However, you may find getting these labels produced more expensive if you're getting preprinted labels made, or if you are using software that produces barcodes you may find that QR Codes aren't available. They haven't used widely as yet.

Any of the multitude of 2D barcodes, yeah, never did brand names when I was looking at them Agree on the increased cost though... And into a text field on a web page would depend on what info you put on them - assuming you just want an asset number?
