Laptops for staff, any recommendations?

We intend to purchase 3 or 4 new laptops for staff, so they dont need to be NASA esque mean machines that will play Crysis at 100fps.

 

We are looking at something around £300 give or take per unit and not netbooks. Wondered if anyone had made a similar purchase or knew of any recommendations? Cant really think of any brands we wouldnt consider so we're pretty open to most ideas.

so basically all they need to do is surf the net, do a bit of facebooking, book holidays, and if push comes to shove... a bit of work - if the familly member e.g. teeenager is not downloading illegal music.

I bought 12 of these for students in our sixth form at the start of the year. I think they are currently available via Insight with double RAM for under £300. Nice decent machine as long as you downgrade to XP from vista.

we've recently purchaced from the the acer outlet store, acer-man gave me some great prices on extensa 5230e's (I think that's the model), or try Simon from CPLTD, I have'nt had laptops from them but the last quote I had for kit was £££££ cheaper than anyone. Edited October 15, 2009 by ozzy

I've had some Lenovo kit lately, seem pretty sturdy and pretty nippy!

 

The line that replaced actual "Thinkbook" or whatever they called it are really nice and sturdy. Metal hinges and built like they might survive a decent drop. You just have to be wary of buying the more consumer-oriented line like I did by mistake. I won't mention the model but with XP Pro and a finger print reader you'd think you were getting a business class product but sadly the build quality is fairly average.

 

Anyway in my experience the £400 mark is the sweet spot for a basic teacher laptop, and if there are any deals on you can even squeeze a carry case and mouse out of that budget. As long as you have at least 2GB of RAM you can't really go wrong spec-wise these days so be more selective about build quality. I use mostly HP kit and don't have too many problems.

I've bought a few Acer Extensa 5630's from Insight fairly recently @ approx £340 and everyone seems quite happy so far with them.

The majority of our laptops are Toshiba, and I'd recommend them. Good prices and good build.
